March 2007 all of my books will be available on and all other booksellers.

Background Information

Prior to the death of my mother in 2005, I took her to every book signing, regardless where it was. She accompanied me to Dublin, Ireland where I signed 1000 copies in one week. She loved to tell everyone about my first 'book deal', which, according to her (she was known to stretch the truth when it came to praising her one-and-only) occured when I was six-years-old. "Richard wrote a story about a rabbit with five legs. His friend Red Erskin had a piece of Fleers Double Bubble Gum, unattainable during WW-II. Richard wanted the gum and Red wanted the story. Done deal."

Birth Place
Toledo, OH USA

Honorable Mention from Writer's Digest 1999 short story competition.--Nominated for the 2002 Pushcart Award for my short story "A Father's Visit."--The McKannahs is published and is receiving rave reviews. I'll be in the western USA this 2005 spring promoting it at book signings in Texas, Arizona, New mexico, and California. <--Update: Signed several hundred copies, and then spent a few months in Florida signing BLUE WATER ADVENTURE. I sold all but about 100. Since it will now be printed by the new publisher, when the copies I have are gone, there will be no more. Mine have many pictures of those wild drug smuggling days, and lobster trapping trips when we battled pirates in the Caribbean, who were constantly stealing our traps. They had rifles--we had machine guns and one 20MM cannon. We all came home--they didn't. Musta sunk from loading too many of our traps on their old boats?

Additional Information

I received my private pilot license in 1973 and was working on my multi-instrument rating but was interrupted by the events that led to "Blue Water Adventure." When the gunsmoke cleared and the bodies (Those found) were being stacked to be counted, Dottie and I quietly slipped away to a little paradise in South America. My partner/buddy (Raymond James) should have joined us. He's still doing time in the federal penitentiary. He calls every week and we write often. I told everyone, "Time to get the hell outa Dodge, boys, 'cause the shit's about to hit the fan. Those new guys fishin' around Everglade's City don't even have line on their poles." None believed me, but they all now know that those guys were DEA agents. All of my pals went to prison. Some are still there. A few were murdered before they went. A couple died in there. The rest are either chasing schools of fish, or running airboat tours. Before Dottie and I climbed in our plane to head south, a pal said, "Y'oughta stick aroun' Rick, 'cause we're all gonna be richer'n them damn Arabs." UPDATES: (1) My pal (Raymond, in the book) was released from Miami Federal in early 2006, after serving 14 years. He plans to return to trapping crawfish. He recently told me, "Ain't gonna do anything to get thrown back in there. That was a long fourteen years." (2) My wife Dottie (41 years together) died on 9-4-2002. My son runs Grizzly Bookz Publishing. I spend most of my time in the Bahamas working on the next book. Keep an eye on my website for the first novel ever about the Caribbean cannibals. CARIB INDIAN ~warrior cannibal~ will be available in early 2007. BCNU @ -- UPDATE pal was allowed to relocate to Key West and he's now back to trapping...stone crabs again, just like we did in Everglade's City, but no more drug hauling. He is happy to be back out on the ocean, which is all he's ever done EXCEPT during that 15 years in prison...I'm lookin f'ward to going out on his boat later this year.
