Though writing has always been a driving force for me, I only found my true voice about five and a half years ago, which just so happens to be the time my son was born … coincidence? Hmm?!
For years I’ve tried to come up with the Oscar winning plot which would star John Malkovich … movie plots are not my thing but Malkovich rocks! For about a year, I researched, dug, turned and toiled then analyzed everything and anything about hair … yes, hair! Why? To write a book on the subject – this is still on my to-do list by the way.
In Haiti, where I spend close to a year teaching English and math, I kept a daily log which includes almost every tidbit of every second of every day. I had a blast and I keep reading my log, even after ten years.
When Joshua was born … no wait, I’m getting ahead of myself! When my wife and I knew we were going to have a baby, we ran (actually we drove) to the nearest bookstore and bought an arms-full of picture books to read to our then still microscopic-sized child. That was back in 2003. Now nearing the end of 2010, we still read to him on a daily basis and he loves it … so do we!
We read to him in French and English and, as we do, we love to watch him react to either the illustrations or the words – not to brag but he’s been reading since he was 3 or so. Robert Munsch was a big hit, and still is. His wacky characters paired with Micheal Martchenko’s illustrations were instant winners in our household. Though we’re not TV junkies, our son watched Dora the Explorer, Diego, Word Girl, Super Why, etc. Interactive in their own way, they were a hit with Joshua, and that’s when the light went on!
“I’m going to write children’s books!” is what I declared to the world.
Though I’ve never taken a writing class per say, I’ve always been a natural at setting words down. My background is accounting believe it or not … but no more! The only numbers I want to see from now on are those related to my book sales and positive statistics about literacy, worldwide.
A lady I got to know thru the Internet was kind enough to mention AuthorsDen. I am here today in order to learn about other authors, to share my passion for children’s books and open myself up to all whom will accept me in.
Sincerely,
AD
