Retired Navy captain fighter pilot then rancher now grandfather following Jesus carefully for the legacy of them six youngins.

Background Information

One very, very full life behind me serves to shape the remaining years as a life lived well and finished well.  Legacy was once a distant concept; it is now a passion.  It is not for me, but for "them" that I now work hard as if a Sockeye struggling upstream against obvious forces for my endlife glory of leaving generations to follow.  "Them?"  My children and grandchildren and fathers and grandfathers worldwide in what have become fatherless generation.

Why this "way too serious" frame of life when the joys and freedom of retirement is the norm of the civilized western world?  Because "it is one life, soon past, only what's done for Christ will last."  That was good enough to send Dr. Livingstone to the deeps of dark Africa, and it's good enough for me to recognize I can relax with joy in endless time in Heaven but have only a few years (prostate cancer assure it) to finish well with an enduring legacy.  I write this overlooking the eighth tee and a duck pond on a perfect spring day.  My neighbors intend to improve their golf handicap.  I intend to help my son build a godly heritage in six extraordinary creations of God's gracious hand.

Influences at this stage are more than can be presented in the 45 minutes my wife and I spoke in our church; 45 years in 45 minutes is like a rock skipping a pond's calm surface, ten skip-overs and only one sinks in. (A recap on my blog "Legacy of Grace").

Here's what shapes my outlook and my manner of being:  Southern Ca surfer, skin diver, Wheaton College for football (championship!), and writing major, Navy for ten years of landing on carriers and dodging missiles in the skies of Vietnam, ten years more as a naval reservist and worker for Campus Crusade for Christ, followed by four more years as a little shot in the big-shot world of Pentagon as three-striper Congressional Liaison functionary and as aide to President Reagan, then called on by God and one of His (and my) best friends to help start a missionary organization and, thus, a bunch of years all over the world before starting my own mission, three international business and one charity for pure water in the poorest cities of the world, ranching was my passion in the last ten years of business as a missionary platform, so marrying my daughter to a therapeutic cowboy fit well.  What didn't fit at first was the death of my son at 31 with he and his wife living on the ranch and managing our global business, Taylored Communications, International.

Birth Place
Glendale, CA United States

Won the Orange County, CA, Lion's Club area speaker contest as high school freshman, 1951. Not big now, but huge then and set a course. Military medals, nearly completed doctorate, don't stick on my "About Me" wall nearly as brightly as my 8 minutes on the Mickey Mouse Club newsreel or my travel to 69 nations as my role as co-founder and field director of a major Christian mission. Oh, certifications? Certificated California Guest Teacher (Substitute).

Additional Information

In the final leg of a man's short journey on earth, "finishing well" is a built in call to the man who recognizes he is but a bit player in God's Great Story, of which Jesus is the hero. I, thus, have recognized the accolades and awards will mean nothing if I have not finished well with my Lord and with my children and grandchildren who are the proof of a worthy legacy for the dark future in which the next generations must live out their part of The Story.

Our blog, to wit, dads teaming with dads, including their own, to leave a legacy of good and godly children to stand out as lighthouses of hope for the challenging years ahead.

Wild Gray Goose
The Celtics of yore fancied The Holy Spirit as the Wild Goose, flying in and out of lives in wild, unpredictable moments of God's glory. I, too, follow The Wild Goose, in unpredictable and wild ways, grayed and well-aged as if by spirits left long in oaken barrels.
