Discovering I could write when I was 61, I was even more surprised when people paid money for my first book and asked for more - making my first 3 novels Canadian Bestsellers. I now have nine published novels and two IPPY Gold Medals. At 76, I'm having so much fun I don't want to stop ... and won't!

Background

A native of Yorkshire, England, I'm the eldest son of ten siblings and they loved it when I told them my own brand of bedtime stories. I learned early in life to face challenges head on and was a real scrapper never turning down a fight if the cause was good enough. I've been in business since I was a six-year-old when I discovered I could easily turn knowledge into opportunity, utilizing this experience for my Lizzie Series. Later, as an expert in my field of mining engineering, I travelled internationally soaking up experiences and personalities I utilize in all my novels.
I spent 7 years working in the Australian desert and finally moved to Canada working in the frozen north of Baffin Island. From there I moved to Victoria, BC where I met my Canadian wife/author, Joyce Sandilands. As a young child, I had an inborn love of history and some years later when recovering from a surgery discovered my talent for putting words together by writing my first novel.
Joyce edits and publishes my books and is also the author of a chapter book series, "Moonbeam Series" and is now co-author of our 2nd Gold Medal winning novel, Whispers Across Time.
By popular demand, Joyce and I produced a CD of my personal stories (in lieu of me writing a lengthy autobiography which readers kept asking for). Check out the sample stories at: www.jrobertwhittle.com/laughing.html

Accomplishments
|
|
2007 - Winner of a Gold Medal in the 2007 Independent Publisher Awards (IPPYs) for Best Fiction Regional Category: Canada-West.
This all began back when I was in Grade School and I earned a set of Charles Dickens novels for my essay writing. Later I graduated from mining college at Leeds University becoming the youngest mining engineer in England's history. I played cricket in Northern England (becoming a rather infamous wicket keeper in the '60s for my daring style!)

Additional Information

I've written 8 historical novels in 9 years and because I love history they are extremely true to historical fact. They include the 4-book Lizzie Series, and the 3-book Victoria Chronicles. My readers tell me my novels are true family-friendly books. Also for these reasons, my novels are now found in many school, college, and university history classes (US/Canada/UK) and/or English Literature classes.
I sell my books mainly at craft shows and outdoor markets in Victoria, BC area of Canada.
