I was originally inspired by Jack Kerouac, and kept a diary while travelling the world on a shoestring in my twenties.  Hunter S. Thompson and Paul Theroux were other influences. I spent my thirties in university, and received a doctorate at the end of it. I've been a freelance writer for six years.
