Brodsky's first career as a soldier is reflected in his fields of research: literature of war, military elements in Renaissance drama and the works of Joseph Conrad. His Gentlemen of the Blade: A Social and Literary History of the British Army (Greenwood/Praeger, 1989) is a standard source.
