I was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, with the strange hybrid backround of being poor, Jewish, Southern, and very much gay. My father died when I was eleven, leaving my family bankrupt. I grew up in a public housing project, where we were the only Jewish family and I was beaten up about once a week. We were the poor relations of rich relations — a fact that never escapes me. My father loved to read and loved stories, so I grew up with both.
