Born in New York Keith G. Laufenberg moved around the world every few years, as his father was in the navy and worked for the government his entire adult life. The author got in a lot of fights and trouble early in life, maybe partly due to always being a new kid in town, and became a juvenile delinquent, but at age 17 he joined the Marine Corps where he took up boxing and, after being discharged made a meager living as a professional boxer, for ten years.
