A twenty year veteran of the Army MPs, I enjoyed a career in law enforcement. My early studies were in paleontology and entomology, but I never pursued those fields, either in higher education or as a career. As a voracious reader from about age twelve, I discovered sci-fi when I picked up A.E. van Vogt's "Pawns of Null-A", and was fascinated by space travel, teleportation, and other aspects of the genre.
