One of the earliest symptoms is a change in the way things smell or taste, which may leave a metallic taste in your mouth called Dysgeusia. It is caused by the increasing level of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormones that are made when a women is pregnant. They double every couple of days. These are the hormones that are present in your urine that make a home pregnancy test positive.
When you miss your period (menses) there can be many reasons but most likely it is because you are pregnant. A home pregnancy test can detect the pregnancy hormone HCG as early as four days before your missed period. It is rare that you will get a false positive but it is possible to get a false negative. It depends on the level of the hormones present. It is important to note that you may test positive and then get your period. This is known as early miscarriage. Most women never even know they are pregnant, unless they have had some other early symptoms, they will start their period and never be the wiser.
As early as two weeks into your pregnancy you may have swelling of the breasts. You will notice that they are tender to the touch and the areolas may have darkened. Around the same time you may begin to experience another rite of passage for pregnant women everywhere: Morning Sickness.
Nausea and Vomiting are what all pregnant women dread, but it is a good sign that the pregnancy is progressing as it should. These can be easily managed in a variety of ways, however, in extreme cases women are unable to keep anything down. This extreme form of morning sickness is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. It is a very debilitating pregnancy complication in which women suffer from dehydration, greater than 5% pre pregnancy weight loss, and other complications which require immediate medical care or hospitalization...
