I read about this woman and with all I am researching I though It would be nice to give some appreciation where it is due.
Before the 1840s the mentally ill had been treated either as criminals and placed in jails, or as social misfits placed in poor houses. A pioneer for the mentally ill was a Massachusetts schoolteacher, Dorothea Dix. After reporting to the state legislature the shocking treatment of the mentally ill in Massachusetts.-confined.....in cages, closets, cellars, stalls and pens! Chained, naked and beaten with rods and lashed into obedience! Legislation was passed to set up state hospital for the insane. Dorothea Dix carried her crusade with her across the country, resulting in improved care for the mentally ill in improved states.
