Why is it a stigma is often associated with mental illness, depression and sexual abuse, especially by the very people who are supposed to help us through it, the men and women of God?

Why is it a stigma is often associated with mental illness, depression and sexual abuse, especially by the very people who are supposed to help us through it, the men and women of God?

Tina Zahn speaks openly about that day in 2004 when she made the decision to end her life, the famous event that would change the way the nation looked not only at Post Partum depresison but it went so much deeper than that.

When Tina was younger her stepfather, the man she had once thought was her real Father sexually abused her, and when her Mother found out instead of trying to help her daughter through the ordeal she let a distance come between herself and her daughter, Tina was left feeling alone, and left feeling like this was her fault. She learned to hide the pain.

The trauma in her life left it hard for her to turn to others when she was in real trouble, so when she got preganant in college, the only way she thought was a way out was to have not just one but two abortions, but those abortions scarred her for life. She came to the realization that she had let someone kill her babies, so when she finds her sister Nadine is pregnant, and there Mom is pushing her to have an abortion, Tina finally tells someone what she went through, and Nadine decides not to have the abortion.

Unfortunately Tina's story is not an isolated one, as Christians, we are far to often afraid to speak the ugly truths, to talk about things that happened to us, when in fact we should feel free to seek the counselling of fellow believers.

Domestic abuse is another issue the church so often tends to shy away from, but my spiritual mentor Sister Ruth knows first hand exactly what Domestic abuse can do, her daughter was murdered, and she has mentioned it a few times in the Wednesday Night Bible Studies we used to have in the small church we used to attend. I am not going to go into the gruesome details of the murder, because that is not my place, but I am going to say, we should be more willing to listen to others. Sister Ruth's daughter was trying to get out of the situation with the help and supporf of her family, but this tragedy happens, and I know she will carry the grief with her all her life...

To Be Continued...

There's also a stigma with being disabled, as we both know. Heartbreaking article with an all important message; we should reach out to help those who are in need!
