A talk given before 200 members of the Democrats of Rossmoor in Walnut Creek, CA

The news today is heartbreaking. To voice my anguish I can only invoke two of the supreme speeches in all human history. For I must now speak of a dream destroyed.

Yes, I had a dream. I had a dream that a poor kid - the oldest of seven children who all lived at times with their mother and father in the family car – I had a dream that this kid could grow up to become president of the United States. I had a dream that this people’s president would at long last bring to the citizens of the United States what every other industrialized country in the world has: not-for-profit medical care for all the people. I had a dream that this president would bring to an end the illegal occupation of Iraq, turn off the awful spigot of blood, and call to a halt the appalling waste of over a trillion dollars from our national treasury. I had a dream.

That this president would restore to life our near-dead Constitution, would honor the Geneva Convention, would close down the torture cells and enable the United States to take its place once again as a respected member of the family of nations. I had a dream. That the United States would lead the way toward world peace by promoting the complete elimination of nuclear weapons from the earth – I had a dream.

That this president would guarantee the right afforded under civil law to all people in our country to marry the person of their choice. I had a dream. Dennis Kucinich promised as president to work for all this – and more! Campaign Finance Reform, a Department of Peace... He would issue an executive order allowing marijuana for medical purposes. He would immediately lift the trade embargo on Cuba and abolish the travel ban.

But the dream is dead; the campaign of Dennis Kucinich is dead. Friends, neighbors, countrymen – lend me your ears. I come to bury Dennis, not to praise him. The corporate media hath told you Dennis was “not viable.” Kucinich beat all other candidates in poll after poll: 31% in one poll, 42% in another - 76% on an Internet poll in which 110,000 people voted! Was this “not-viable”? Yet corporate media says he is “not viable,” and our media masters are all, all honorable men.

Let me show you these honorable men. If you have tears, prepare to shed them now. Look how ABC ran its dagger through when after a big debate its two online polls showed that Kucinich won that debate. ABC cut both polls from its website. In the Iowa debate the Des Moines Register cut Dennis. In the New Hampshire debate ABC cut Dennis. And in the Las Vegas debate NBC - which at first had included Dennis - turned around and stabbed him in the back. Kucinich’s fellow Democrats uttered not a word of protest against this blatant censorship.

They all consented to the conspiracy - the great female champion Clinton, the great populist Edwards, and Barack Obama! That was the unkindest cut of all. Et tu, Barack? Why, in Iowa Dennis had released all his supporters, urging them to go over to Obama! Et tu, Barack? Then fall Dennis! And so Kucinich did fall.

O, what a fall was there, my countrymen! Then I, and you, and all of us fell down, whilst corporate treason flourished over us. Kucinich was assassinated. It had to be. Why, imagine what would happen to the bloated war profits of huge military manufacturer GE – owner of NBC - if Dennis were allowed to speak and to win us away from war and war and war.

But no! Here he is, marr'd, as you see, with traitors. Bear with me; my heart is in the coffin there with Dennis, and I must pause till it come back to me. Yes, what happened to Dennis Kucinich is a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. That such a giant of a man should be so belittled, that a person of such high principle should be thrown so low, and a candidate of such courage should be so scoffed at.

Courage? Why, Dennis has the courage to look the fearsome and loathsome Dick Cheney in the eye and call him to account for his lies and his crimes! But it’s all to no avail. He was “not viable.” He is a weird man with a funny name to be marginalized, to be ostracized, to be disqualified! Was he “not viable” because of his looks? The fault, dear neighbors, lies not in his looks, but in his views that he is an underling. His views are revolting to our corporate masters. They silenced him in the debates and now have forced him out altogether.

But Dennis Kucinich will not be quiet. They will have to assassinate him to silence him. And no, we should not put that past the “honorable men” who have a choke hold on our democracy. The GE’s of our country, the NBC TV’s of our land with their war profits and their censorship and their treachery are destroying democracy in America.

Is that too strong a thing to say? Then why cannot I shake off this awful feeling that there is no hope for our country? For if America is to be a great nation it must tear away from its throat the choke hold of the corporations.

How will we vote now that the people’s true champion was silenced by traitors? I don’t know what I will do. It all seems an empty ritual now, a farce – a fraud! I don’t know. But I do know that somehow, in some way we must find our way to that glorious day that we can say to the corporations “Free at last, free at last, the people have the power, we’re free at last.”
