Will a Woman ever lead Americans?
By Ahmed Dodo

Telling the story of America without involving the great struggles of their women is like telling the story of the great TaJ Mahaaj in India, without specifying why the spectacular castle was built in the first place.
The American woman no doubt has come a long way in the struggle for independence and proper enshrinement of democracy and the rule of law in the strongest nation in the world. Over the years the American woman have been a role model to many other women from different nations, from Europe, to Asia , down to Africa where trying to be, act and look like the American woman is an everyday phenomenon.
Recently the news of a popular American woman presidential candidate seems to be the cynosure of all eyes as Senator Hillary Clinton braised up to conquered history as the first elected woman president in America long democratic history.
One bothering question many observers, including this writer are facing is: will a woman ever be allowed to lead the strongest nation on earth? This troubling question deems from the current show of masculine ego by the male dominated Washington setting.
The America woman despite her over pampering, no doubt has contributed in no small measure to the success of the country, both politically, economically and socially.
She has been in the fight against oppression, blackmail and discrimination prevalent in the country some yeas ago. Many American women have conquered some of the male dominated sector and have been able to hold their held high amidst grumbling from the male folks. She has in actual sense show much love to her offspring and appreciates their rights. One known fact is that she has always been there for her male counterpart either as a housewife, girlfriend or mistress.
It is against the backdrop of this much sacrifices that many are envisioning a better president in a woman if elected as the next American president. With opinions that a woman if elected could help dose the high tension in the country and help regain her respect among other world nation that are now suspiciously dealing with the hitherto dream country of almost all freedom loving individual.
The American woman have come a long way in portraying the kind of freedom and independence she wants as exemplified by the great Women Liberation Movement of the early sixties when the birth of equal rights between men and women, with the demand for women rights to determine her own identity and sexuality as part of the seven demands of equal pay, equal education, equal opportunity at work and equal financial and legal dependence, all materialized. Kudos and appreciation I believe would always be given to great American women who have ensured that the woman species are free and have equal opportunity to speak, vote and be voted for. One great feminist that came to mind is no other than Betty Friedman and her best selling book ‘ The Feminine Mystique’ published in 1963 and the subsequent forming of the American National Organization for Women (NOW), which helped bring out the American woman , her ideas and what she demanded from her male dominated society.
The stage very soon will be set and the whole world is watching with keen interest to see if the mighty American will play equality to the gallery and set out what it has always preached to the world, by embracing the reality that a woman could someday become the next tenant of her prestigious White House, just has it lets go its chauvinistic masculinity by appointing Condoleezza Rice to that all powerful position of Secretary of State, after all the American woman has always been consistent with Uncle Sam’s history
