Dreamstone is a gemstone unique to the eastern Missouri Ozarks.

What exactly is Dreamstone?

In the words of the Missouri Geological Society it is, "a localized metamorphism of the Davis dolomites in the upper Cambrian series."

Realizing as I do that not everyone is a science geek like me, I'll expand on that explaination just a bit.

The Saint Francis Mountains in the eastern Missouri Ozarks are among the oldest on earth.  The minerals there are igneous in origin.  Eons ago, the oceans covered what is now Missouri turning the Saint Francis Mountains into a island.  During that period, sedimentary rock was formed.  Those were the Davis dolomites mentioned previously.  At some point in time after that, the heat and pressure of an igneous intrusion metamorphasized the dolomite into Dreamstone.

The photo depicts one possible scenario for the creation of Dreamstone.

Mark Hadley of Annapolis, Missouri discovered the mineral.  Quoting his web page, "This stone was in my back yard.  I walked over it for 31 years.  I had no idea it was there until I saw myself digging rocks there in a dream.  I discovered it the next morning in January 1998."

Mark is also a lapidarian.  Be sure to browse the hand made jewelry he and his wife, Rita, have created.
