No one seems to be excited about having to wait. We are a rather impatient society. However, it is much easier to wait and be patient when we understand the process and purpose of waiting.

                        Perfected in Patience

Pastor Freddie Steel

Patience, a Righteous Fruit –

Not too many of us are experts at patience. Honestly, we just don’t like to have to wait. We become impatient at traffic lights, fast-food drive-thrus, the grocery line, etc. That kind of impatience really flows from the disregard we hold for the other person. We are patient with people or things in direct proportion to the value we place on them. But, nevertheless, patience is a virtue and an integral component for living a peaceful, relatively strife-free life.

Understanding the Process for All Processes

John 12: 24-26 –
24. I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains [just one grain; it never becomes more but lives] by itself alone. But if it dies, it produces many others and yields a rich harvest.
25. Anyone who loves his life loses it, but anyone who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. [Whoever has no love for, no concern for, no regard for his life here on earth, but despises it, preserves his life forever and ever.]
26. If anyone serves Me, he must continue to follow Me to cleave steadfastly to Me, conform wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying] and wherever I am, there will My servant be also. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.

Stated simply, something essential and beneficial is happening behind the scenes when you are forced to wait. When we understand that inactivity does not mean that nothing is happening we are better-abled to wait enthusiastically.

Patience Defined –

- Patience is defined as steadfastness, constancy, or endurance.
In the NT, patience is the characteristic of a man who is
- not swerved from his deliberate purpose and
- his loyalty to faith and
- piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings.

Literally, patience is

- "an abiding under" (hupo, "under," meno, "to abide").
- grows only in trial, Jam 1:3, most often is passive, i.e., as in "endurance."
Patience is an essential discipline, grace, and developed quality.
Patience does not make sense. Why?
- Because ‘common sense’ dictates that a responsible man should be doing something to better his situation.
Patience is essential because
- it is tied to a portion of our assignment, season, or destiny where
- the unseen Hand of God is ordering and organizing things that are essential but that we cannot see.
Patience is sometimes the prize.
- There are times and occasion that through your patience, a deepened and enriched fellowship with Jesus is your reward.
Patience is confidence at rest.
- Rest is the undisturbedness and tranquility of the peace of the Kingdom of God.

Patience Is Therapeutic For Our Soul

Romans 5
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ:  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we
- stand, and
- rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
And not only so, but we
- glory in tribulations also: knowing that
- tribulation worketh patience; and
- patience, experience; and experience, hope:
5. And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in   our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Summary –

Tribulation:
a) a pressing, pressing together, pressure;
b) Metaphorically, oppression, affliction, tribulation, distress, straits
- Worketh:
a) to perform, accomplish, achieve;
b) to work out i.e. to do that from which something results; a) that results in;
c) to fashion i.e. render one fit for a thing
- Patience:
to be able to continue to abide under and grow, especially during trials
- Experience:
a trial, a proof, and a specimen of tried worth - the process of proving; rendered "experiment" in 2Cr 9:13, AV, RV, and, "the proving (of you);" in 2Cr 8:2, AV, "trial," RV, "proof.

Patience Provides Us a Very Different Perspective On Life –

- Patience is confidence at rest.
- Rest is the undisturbedness and tranquility of the peace of the Kingdom of God.

Philippians 4: 10-13 – NLT
10. How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. 11. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13. For I can do everything through Christ, Who gives me strength.
AMP – 11. Not that I am implying that I was in any personal want, for I have learned how to be content (satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or disquieted) in whatever state I am.
12. I know how to be abased and live humbly in straitened circumstances, and I know also how to enjoy plenty and live in abundance. I have learned in any and all circumstances the secret of facing every situation, whether well-fed or going hungry, having a sufficiency and enough to spare or going without and being in want.
13. I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency].

Patience, Experience and Perfection –

Different Life Experiences -

a) in trials, generally, Luk 21:19
By standing firm, you will win your souls.”(which is to be understood by Mat 24:13
13 “But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”); cp. Rom 12:12; Jam 1:12;
b) in trials by way of service in the gospel, 2Cr 6:4; 12:12; 2Ti 3:10;
c) under chastisement, which is trial viewed as coming from the hand of God our Father, Hbr 12:7
“ As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father?”;
d) under undeserved affliction, 1Pe 2:20
“Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.”; or active, i.e. == "persistence, perseverance," as
e) in well doing, Rom 2:7
“To those who by patient persistence in well-doing [springing from piety] seek [unseen but sure] glory and honor and the eternal blessedness of] immortality, He will give eternal life.” (AV, "patient continuance");
f) in fruit bearing, Luk 8:15
“But as for that [seed] in the good soil, these are [the people] who, hearing the Word, hold it fast in a just ([a]noble, virtuous) and worthy heart, and steadily bring forth fruit with patience.”;-
g) in running the appointed race, Hbr 12:1.

Patience and Perfected Character

Patience perfects Christian character,
Jam 1:4
(“But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing”),

Fellowship in the patience of Christ
- is the condition upon which believers are to be admitted to reign with Him,
(“If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny and disown and reject Him, He will also deny and disown and reject us.”);
Rev 1:9. For this patience believers are 'strengthened with all power,'
Col 1:11, 'through His Spirit in the inward man,'

The Patience of Jesus
In 2Th 3:5, the phrase "the patience of Christ,' (RV) is holds three interpretations:
(a) the patient waiting for Christ, so AV paraphrases the words,
(b) that they might be patient in their sufferings as Christ was in His, see Hbr 12:2,
(c) in hope; that since Christ is "expecting till His enemies be made the footstool of His feet,'
Hbr 10:13, so they might be patient also in their hopes of His triumph and their deliverance.
'the Lord teach and enable you to love as God loves, and to be patient as Christ is patient."   [From Notes on Thessalonians by Hogg and Vine, pp. 222, 285.]
"the word of My patience" is the word which tells of Christ's patience, and its effects in producing "patience" on the part of those who are His (see above on 2Th 3:5).
