Virginia lawmakers challenge “Obama-care”

What can best be described as a potential constitutional issue, the state of Virginia has overwhelmingly approved legislation challenging mandated healthcare coverage by the federal government.

The Virginia General Assembly and its delegates voted 80-17 to approve a measure to prevent any attempt by the administration to force nationalized healthcare, and preserves Virginia's prerogative rights, as a state.

The bill, the first of its kind, challenges the federal governments attempt to mandate healthcare will now go to the desk of Governor Bob McDonnell, who plans to sign it into law, Virginia of course isn’t the only state to challenge “Obama-care”, and at last count there were approximately thirty four other states, that have either proposed similar measures or have enacted pending legislation.

The bill challenges the federal government’s assertions that it can mandate to the states and override existing state provisions and current state laws governing healthcare.

Obviously, this potential showdown between individual state rights and the federal governments overreaching intrusion, will have a profound affect on each and every citizen, and goes far beyond the issue of healthcare to the very core and fundamental principles of what a free an open society should be about, that of individual choice, and whether this government has a right under our Constitution to mandate, force or intimidate its citizens into purchasing a product or service they may or may not want.

My sense is that if “Obama-care” should pass, we’ll be well on our way to a constitutional crisis, of mega propositions…Virginia not withstanding.
