Bettye Johnson has brought to light a few of the almost forgotten Golden Threads who have made a difference.

March is the month designated as Women's History Month. In my own way, I honor those women from the past who have achieved great things in spite of the climate of male dominance in the sciences, government, political, medical, archaeological and other sectors. This year it came to me that there are many women who are the unsung golden threads who have left their footprints for others to follow.

Fortunately, for the human race, there have always been golden threads that throughout history have passed information to keep the human race in touch with the divine spark within each of us. This divine spark is not religion, but something that transcends and is carried forward. In the women's movement, there have been a number of notable women and this is true in the human rights movements. These women have been of great service to the human race and I have labeled them 'golden threads.'

There is another sector of these golden threads and these are women who carried the divine spark. As I reflect on them, today I see a great movement because of their teachings of ancient wisdom. The Secret is a name that ignites in people the desire to know what the secret is. From my perspective, this current movement is a culmination of what these female golden threads taught. The women I am writing about lived in the United States. There were others in Europe and elsewhere, however I am writing about a particular strand of golden threads.

The women in this strand of golden threads came to their truth of the secret because of severe illnesses for the most part. The beginning of this strand is Mary Baker Eddy 1821-1910.  Because of her illnesses, she went to Phineas Quimby, a clockmaker by trade who realized the power of the mind and healed her. Eddy, the founder of Christian Science injured in 1866, went into seclusion for three years according to her biography. From this, she "became convinced that illness could be healed through an awakened thought brought about by a clearer perception of God. She eventually called this spiritual perception the operation of the Christ Truth on human consciousness."

Emma Curtis Hopkins has been called the "Teachers of Teachers." She became interested in Christian Science and Mary Baker Eddy. Hopkins became a student of Christian Science and studied under Eddy until she developed her own version of the mental practice. Hopkins returned to Chicago where she began teaching her own perspective of mental practice. I first heard of Hopkins when I was a student attending a Divine Science ministerial school in California. I learned that the founders of Unity traveled to Chicago and studied under Hopkins. Mildred Fillmore was quite ill and was healed. From this healing emerged Unity. One of the founders of Divine Science also learned under Hopkins and together with her sisters and a friend became known for their mental practice of healing and from this came Divine Science. Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science is thought to have studied under Hopkins and perhaps this is why she is called the "Teacher of Teachers."

It did not take me too many years after being ordained to realize that religion and spirituality are not the same. Religion is based on fabricated rules, regulations and men's own perspective. Whereas, spirituality is the divine spark that is within every person – female and male on this planet. Everyone born on this planet has a soul and the soul is connected directly to the Divine.

When I became program director of a holistic health center in southern California, I had the opportunity and pleasure to meet Olga Worrell. Olga was about 5'3" tall and wore her hair in a bun topped with a pillbox hat with a short veil when I first met her. During her lecture and healing sessions, Olga told us that she developed her psychic abilities at the age of eight. In 1928, she married Ambrose Worrell also a psychic and healer. Together the two did remarkable things. After Ambrose died, Olga continued with the New Life Clinic, Mount Washington Methodist Church in Baltimore, Maryland.

She shared that she was asked by scientists at Oxford University, England to come there and be tested by them. She accepted and when she arrived, the research team asked if she could move a force (energy) field with her mind. A force field is an energy barrier that stops other energies and this one was in placed inside a Faraday Cage. A Faraday Cage is a metallic box or cage that prevents the entry or escape of an electromagnetic field. The Faraday cage's purpose is to prevent the entry of electromagnetic waves and electric fields, by either containing them in or excluding them from its inner space. This was developed by Michael Faraday in the 19th century. Olga said she stood there and zapped it with her mind and it moved. The scientists were stunned that she could do this using her mind.

When Olga returned to Maryland, she said that a week later she received a phone call from Oxford asking her to do the same, but this time to do it from her home. She told them sure, and they set a time. She usually sat in a chair in her dining room when she went into focus. This time, she left her body and went to the laboratory in Oxford. She knew they had moved the Faraday Cage from the original laboratory, so she moved down the hall and saw a guard standing outside a door. She moved through the door past the guard and saw the Cage. She zapped it with her mind and returned home. Within minutes, she received a phone call and was asked how she did it. She laughed and said that it was her secret. Olga Worrell - a remarkable woman who healed many people, a variety of animals including chickens and plants.

Another remarkable woman was Agnes Sanford, a noted healer. Sanford was married to an Episcopal minister and for a number of years she suffered from severe depressions periodically. It was through a Protestant clergyman laying his hands on her for healing that she was healed. From this, she prayed daily to her Holy Spirit and developed her own method of healing. She also used visualization when she taught healing to others. Sanford was said to have been concerned about a hurricane heading for the east coast with the potential of being dangerous. Sanford and a friend went to the seashore and began talking to the hurricane asking it to turn out to sea and to miss the fishing boats. The hurricane turned out to sea and there were no injuries or devastation. In 1965, she moved to Monrovia, California and continued her healing ministry there. She also communed with the earthquake fault and asked it to be gentle. In her own way, perhaps she helped to avert potential severe earthquakes in that area. Sanford was a prolific writer and her books are available today.

After I read several of Sanford's books, the Santa Ana winds began blowing in Southern California. These strong winds usually come from the Mojave Desert. I was so moved with Sanford's ability to speak to the hurricane that I went out on the balcony of my condominium and called forth the winds to lessen and not blow so hard.  Since my intent was sincere, I knew I could do it and within minutes the winds calmed down to a breeze. I have also done this in other situations and I know that it is possible to do it.

Another great healer is Louise Hay. During my time at the holistic health center, I had the opportunity to attend a meeting in her home and Hay shared her information on healing using affirmations to change the origins of sickness, disease, and other non-productive parts of one's life. This, along with my study of other healers became the basis for my understanding that what we say and what we think matters. Understanding is one thing; however, it is to up to each individual to put it into practice. A pianist or a violinist practices over-and-over. This is what each individual must do.

One of my favorite authors and a healer of the mind is Florence Scovel Shinn. Shinn was born in the late 19th century and was an artist. Through circumstances she became aware of the power of affirmations and began teaching in New York. Her first book, The Game of Life and How to Play It was turned down by publishers and she self-published the book herself. This was followed in 1928 with Your Word is Your Wand and in 1940, The Secret Door to Success. Many of Shinn's students went on to use her affirmations and became successes in their own right. On the back of one of her books is a testimonial by Norman Vincent Peale who authored the best-selling book The Power of Positive Thinking.

All of these women have had a connection with their Divine Power and realized the power of the spoken word and the power of thoughts. They all had the power to heal and to teach others. This power is available to anyone and is primarily unused by the majority of the world populations.

From time immemorial, women have been healers, herbalists, midwives and physicians and in the 14th century, a trend began labeling women as witches and men took over as the medical practitioners. These beautiful women often were executed by burning them or using other methods to murder them. Women have had their own holocausts throughout the ages and on a lesser level, this is continuing today as I write.

In honoring these women of the past, I say the time is now for women to put aside their doubts, their fears, lack of worth, and bring forth their latent abilities and dreams. We can make a difference in the world in spite of what the world situation and economic situation appears to be. It is time for each of us to pick up the baton of the women who have gone before us and continue the movement of Golden Threads.
