Back in the 1970's, I coached a Little League baseball team, and I asked one of my brothers, if he would like to help me coach the team...and his first question to me was, "How much does it pay?" At the time, I don't think my brother knew the meaning of volunteerism and the satisfaction gained from volunteering. All he was concerned with at the time...was the bottom line...money!

The American people are the most giving people in the world...giving of their money...their time (volunteerism); giving of themselves (blood, etc.); and the ultimate giving...of their lives!

Volunteerism (definitions)

- the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people (animals; environment, etc) in the community, rather than for any financial gain;

- the policy or practice of volunteering one's time and/or skills and talents for charitable, educational or other worth-while activities especially in one's community;

 "Whichever way a person turns...he or she can find a person who needs help."  Albert Schweizer

 Celebrating the visitor'reader;  Since the middle of 2008, the traffic to my writing site has quadrupled, and all this is owed to the visitor/reader who thanked, etc.  For it is the visitor/reader who is the most important person in all this publishing process.  None of us would ever survive without the visitor/reader, etc.

From: Cas.Umbk.com;  Volunteering has been a meaningful activity for all ages; adolescents; withing the workplace; and retirees, etc.
Research has proved a positive result of doing for others and finding meaning in activitiers.  Benefits of volunteering include; self-satifaction; altrusism; potential of learning new skells; relaxiation; socialization; status or reward opportunities and community improvement

"Volunteers do not necessarily have the time...they just have the heart."  Elizabeth Andrew

World Volunteer Web; The tenth anniversary of the International Year of the Volunteer, first launched in 2001, offers an exception opportunity to join a global effort to reinvigorate the spirt of volunteerism.  Many entities from all over the world, are already planning on exciting array of events through 2011, to showcase the diversity, breadth, and deapth of volunteering world-wide, to raise the profile of volunteering and to mobilize more volunteers, etc.

The coming of the Internet;  With this technology, so many more things can be done in the interest of volunteering.  About 15 years ago, before I retired, I was thinking of volunteering in the old fashoned way...by going to a brick and mortar establishment.  Those plans changed after I got into writing and after the coming of the Internet.

I think I can do more for people and the environment through my writing all over the world with this technology.  My articles are read all over the world, and think I can get to more people in this fashion, that to volunteer for a few hours a week in a brick and mortar esblishment.  Anyway, I hope so.

"You may have saved a lot of money in your life, but if you have saved a lot of heartache for other people...you are a pretty rich man or woman."  Seth Parker

Those of us who volunteer or who work and give our things away...don't get the satisfaction of getting paid or paid with material things, etc.  We get paid with the satisfaction of helping others in one way or another.  Of the hundreds of emails I've received over the years...here are a couple to show how we get paid:

"Greetings Jerry...I wish to thank you for brightening my day a bit.  Your site was just what I needed in this time in my life.  You see, my mother passed away in June, and I am trying to get back into the swing of things, etc.  Being the 4th of July time of the year, we had all gathered at her house for a big bang and celebration!  Thank you for the laughs I had today."  Wayne"

And another email brought this message..

"Jerry...thanks for a clean and positive website.  I have many shut-in or recovering friends who treasure uplifting humor.  Humor is truly the best medicine for out pain...whether is be physical or emotional.  I know I will be able to come to you site for a joke that is clean.  You are filling an important rold for the family-friendly laughter...God Bless...Maria."

The comments by the visitor and the reader is the fuel that keeps me going.  More can be seen about what I do...and how I benefit from it all, at the following link;

"The breeze...the trees...the bees...all volunteers."  Juliet Carinreap

Anyone and everyone should volunteer doing something...to help others; help the environment; or by helping and caring for animals, etc.  You can always find the time, because you have the heart to do it.  I have confidence in you...and that you will do it.

 I've always been fascinated by the construction industry.  All these littes ants gather in a dusty vacant lot...and before you know it, the building is open for business!  The bulldozzers going back and forth carrying dirt out of the lot and leveling; the plumbers putting in the pipes; the foundation for the building is poured; the dry-wall people and the electricians and carpenters come in and just like magic...the building is open for business!

"We ofter take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude."  Cynthia Ozick

Everyone has something to offer for volunteer work.  Case in point.  I belong to a non-profit singels group and there is a fellow who has been there as a member for about seven years.  He is a contractor by trade, and he is the head of maintenence for the Club.  He takes care of all the heating and cooling problems; smoke-alarms, etc.  The nuts and bolts of the place.  so you see people can use their skills (if they have any) to volunteer in certain ways, etc.

Another case in point;  Many years ago, I worked at the local PBS television station and painted the whole place.  There were two teachers at the station, who were incridable speakers.  Years later, they both retired from teaching, but both are still volunteers with the station, doing fund-raising for the station.

"I've seen and met angels wearing the disguise of ordinary people living ordinary lives." Tracy Chapman

There is all kinds of volunteer work...and all is valued...like stuffing envelopes; watching paint dry; counting clouds; watching grass grow; and the only requirement for being a volunteer is to ...be able to...breath

At the article directory (EzineArticles.com) where I have posted over 100 of my articles, there are too many rules and 'live' editors, etc.  So, I would never be able to end an article like this...that is...with the definition of a word...a word I think too many of us can relate to...and identify with...in today's greedy world...

- selfish: (definition); devoted to or caring for oneself; concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others;
