REVIEW - HOLLYWOOD CASINO -
PERRYVILLE, MD.
© - Tom Hyland - 11/20/10
It opened about a month ago, and I drove the hour to get up there, the day after the Grand Opening. While it is brand new, and relatively beautiful, it has several flaws. A simple comparison and contrast with the other Hollywood Casino in Charlestown, West Virginia should validate my review.
1. SIZE - only about ¼ or 1/5 the size of W.VA.
2. DISTANCE - I live on the Eastern side of Baltimore County, so it is only one hour away,
while WV is 1.5 hours - however, anyone who lives on the Western side would have
the exact opposite drive times.
3. MACHINES - while PV brags of 1,500 new machines, there are some major differences -
None of their machines accept $1 bills, minimum $5. Most of them, maybe 50% or
More - are 1 cent or 2 cent machines - why does that matter you may ask - it misleads
And takes advantage of elderly people who don’t understand - any savvy player knows
that to win a Jackpot on any machine, one must play the Maximum to obtain the
highest Odds - as an example, say a Penny machine requires 200 credits for max -
that’s $2.00 Minimum Every Spin - while a Quarter machine with 5 Credits max would
only be a $1.25 for every Spin!
4. DRINKS - a simple Beer . PV costs you $4 each - Mixed drink = $5 - while . WV as
long as you are playing at a machine ALL DRINKS ARE FREE! Ergo, a $1 Tip to the
waitress is quite reasonable.
5. FOOD - . PV very expensive! Two basic choices: Either a Sit-down Buffet that has a $21.
Minimum - or - the Deli Counter, where Everything Costs about Twice as much as WV!
. WV - a terrific Cheese-Steak Sub is about $7. And 2 can Split it! They also have
Delicious Pizza Slices, plus another Food Stand - PLUS 2 or 3 other Buffet Areas!
6. SMOKING - because PV is in the wonderful ‘FREE STATE’ of MD - there is NO SMOKING
. Sensible WV - they have separate No Smoking Areas at strategic perimeter areas,
while the Main Central area Allows Smoking!
*** PV has One External Designated SMOKING area - after going through two sets of
doors to the outside - you find yourself TRAPPED BY A 20 FOOT HIGH CONCRETE
BLOCK WALL - WITH NO EXTERNAL ‘ESCAPE’ DOORS! IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE
IT IS A DANGEROUS FIRE-TRAP!
Anyone, even Non-Smokers, who would Rush out those closest doors would be
HORRIBLY TRAPPED! ***
7. CARD GAMES - PV has 2 or 3 little Computer operated Gaming Tables where only about
5 people can play at each, while a big TV screen has a Pretty Girl Video supposedly Deal
Electronic ‘Cards’ - DUH! If this isn’t ‘House-Rigged’ I’ll be Surprised! . WV - they
Recently spent Millions on Renovations, and have REAL DEALERS dealing REAL
CARDS - PLUS Roulette and Craps!
SUMMARY - as I happen to be an avid SMOKER - Maryland will NEVER get another Dime from me, no matter how many Casinos they EVER Build here! The Same Thing applies to all 3 of the Casinos in Delaware, for the Same Reason!
AND - as soon as you cross the Potomac River Bridge and enter Virginia on the way to Charlestown, there is an EXXON station on the Left Side where you can buy CARTONS of CHEAP CIGARETTES!
SO - if VEGAS was a TEN - to me, CHARLESTOWN is a TWENTY, because I don’t have to spend a FORTUNE in Plane Fare and Hotel Bills and if I do want to spend a night there, they Do have a Brand-New Hotel on the Premises! - thus - PERRYVILLE is a ZERO!
IF YOU ARE A MARYLANDER, AND YOU LIKE ‘SLOTS’ - GO TO CHARLESTOWN!
