If you're a lazy person; a pill-popper; a penny-pincher; a person with a closed-mind...I don't think this piece is for you! Good healthcare has been my top priority all my life...and I think a person has to be an advocate for themselves in order to have good health, etc.

Do you really think your doctor is going to prescribe blueberries; prune juice; olive oil; green tea...or anything else that is good for you?  Think again!  Your doctor is going to fill you full of chemicals...that's how he or she makes their living...writing prescriptions, etc.

"The greatest wealth is health."  Virgil

In my view, this country is drowning in prescription drugs...so much so, that I wrote an article, which is entitled, 'Prescription Drugs: The #4 Killer In America' and can be seen at the following link;

Leaving the VA Medical Center:  As a veteran, I've gotten my healthcare at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico for about 18 years.  Everyone knows that the VA is a training hospital (at least the one here is), and I never liked going to the VA Medical Center for anything.  But, I didn't have much choice, because I couldn't afford my healthcare plan in the private sector.  But, I promised myself, that if I ever got the chance, I would leave the VA and never look back.

Over the years, I've been screwed at the VA Medical Center, and there has never been anyone at the VA accountible or responsible for their actions.  If a person gets slapped in the face at the VA...you've been slapped in the face and that's it!  Many veterans don't have many options or no options at all when this happens!  And, when the disability happened to me...guess where it happened?  At the VA Medical Center, of course!

After this happened, and unbeknownst to me at the time, there was a two-year waiting period to qualify for Medicare, because I was only 60 years old at the time of the incident.  When I got the letter from Social Secruity, I was jumping for joy...as this could my ticket out of the VA and get my own healthcare in the private sector.  I couldn't get out of the VA Medical Center fast enough!

The only problem for me at the time...I was getting everything at the VA for FREE...and now that I switched to the private sector healthcare...I was going to have to pay for everything, etc.  This is where the penny-pincher and tight-wad comes in.  There are some people in this country, who would not pay for anything, if they can get it free!  All of us are going to make our own bed...

"In order to change...we must be sick and tired of being sick and tired."  Unknown

Medicare, at the time, would cost me about $93.00/mo and what can you get for that money...not even a sack of groceries, so I thought it was okay to get started.  My doctor visits would cost me about $30.00 a pop, and I thought that was reasonable, too.  My medications would cost me (set by Medicare) $2.50 for 30 day supply and I thought that was okay, too.  Anything to get out of the VA!  Along with free medications; doctor visits and healthcare, I could get all the incompetance; apathy; and ignorance I wanted at the VA for FREE!  Not to mention the possibility of guinea-pigging and experimentation at a training hospital, but that is just speculation on my part.

I left the VA Medical Center in September, 2008, and I haven't been back since.  I have gotten my flu shots at the private healthcare plan and have cost me nothing.  I won't even go back to the VA...not even DOA! (dead-on-arrival)

"Red meat is bad for you...but blue-green meat...now THAT'S bad for you!"  Tommy Smothers

Chiropractic care since 1976;   This is where an open mind comes in, as I have always believed in alternative healing.  So much so, that I've been to a chiropractor over 100 times since 1976 on my wellness plan.  You know, there was a time when chiropractors were shunned and not accepted by the medical community.  But, all that's changed in 2010, and that's because the American people are getting tired of drugs that don't work; being over-medicated and needless surgeries, etc.  There's just about a chiropractic office on every corner today in America...they must be doing something right!

In 2010, there are over 20 chiropractors on my private sector plan, and I have seen two of them, with one retiring.  Throughout the years, I have taken care of migraine headaches; high-blood pressure; sinus problems; regularity; colds; flu; nose-bleeds...and chiropractors don't prescribe drugs...so I have helped my colon; kidneys; lever against damage by chemicals.

Here again, is where the penny-pincher comes in...I've had to pay for nearly all of this on my own because insurances would not pick up chiropractic, but it's been worth it over the years.  My father would never be a good candidate for chiropractic, because he had such a close mind to everything. He was good and crying and whining all the way to the grave at age 81.  My father never had a quality life...he was always sick (sickly) of something!

"Fresh air impoverishes a doctor."  Danish Proverb

From: The People's Pharmacy:  My 33 year old son committerd suicide five years ago while was taking Prozac.  Apparentely, neither the doctor nor the pharmacist warned my son nor his wife that Prozac could cause suicidal thoughts.  My son had two precious children that he loved very much.  Now, they are without a father.  Losing a child was 100 times more painful than losing my parents.  People should be told about other ways to manage depression such as counseling; vigorous exercise; or an herb like St. John's wort.

My Two-Cents:  While I was at the VA Medical Center, I was given something for depression, too.  It was not Prozac.  Knowing the risks, I only took this drug for about a month, but during that time, I lost control of my right foot...in other words, I started to limp, just as I had stepped off a curb wrong!  As soon as I got rid of the drugs...my limp went away and I started walking normally again!  But, it took about another month for my normal walk to come back!  Drugs can be dangerous, and can affect different people in different ways...

While I was in my first HMO in the private sector (2008 to 2010), I was hospitalized twice...once in the emergency room for over 12 hours; and about six months later, I was hospitalized for two days over Columbus Day week-end in 2009. With six tests performed on me during this time, doctor's never found the culprit...but I know what the culprit was...it was the metformin that I was given for diabetes in a large dosage.

I'v also been hospitalized three times at the VA Medical Center because fo medications...once in the intensive care unit, because my stomach was bleeding.

These are reasons why I want to limit the amount of chemicals and drugs I take, and of the ones I take, try to cut down as much as I can.  I know of some people taking 20 to 30 pills a day...and this is just stepping over the line of insanity, in my view!

These are other reasons why I have made the alternative healing one of my priorities during my lifetime, and do my best in staying away from drugs.

AccupunctureBecause I've always been an advocate for myself...I've always wanted to try accupuncture.  But, my current private plan doesn't cover it.  Because it is the end of 2010 and open enrollment at a compteting healthplan, I noticed that they do, in fact, cover accupuncture, so I decided to switch plans.  Being in my current healthplan has not all been peaches and cream over the last two years.  There have been some problems, but it's better than being at the VA Medical Center.

Why accupuncture?  Because I want to get as far away from drugs (chemicals) as I can.  The only way I can do that, is to have an open mind to the alternative healing methods and give them a try.  I've seen excellent results over the years with chiropractic...and now I'll try accupuncture.  Heck...over the years, I've been a pin-cushion for society...so what do I have to lose?

"If you don't take care of yourself, your undertaker will overtake that responsibility for you."  Carrie Latet

All of us have a two-edge sword to deal with in the future. The way I see it...is you're probably going to live by the pill...but you might die from the pill, too!
