Agents are classified broadly as pathogens and toxins.

Pathogens

Simply germs such as the common cold invade a host and cause illness. the Black Plague is thought to have been caused by Yersinia pestis pathogen while, in our time, AIDS, currently killing millions, is caused by the HIV pathogen. The ultimate challenge for researchers is to modify a pathogen to produce an agent that is resistant to vaccination, fungicide and antibiotics.

Toxins 

Think snake bite or deadly night shade – a toxin is a poisonous substance produced by a living organisms. Toxins cause illness on contact or by absorption by body tissues. Some, such as a mosquito bite, have a short term and mild effect  while others, such as botulinum toxin, are lethal.                                    

 Genetic Engineering

Advances in genetic engineering are speeding up the production of a viable agent New techniques used by geneticists enable the creation of deviant micro-organisms with the desired characteristics.Transforming  microbes into WMDs is providing geneticists with a fascinating and lucrative area of research.
