I have written a few poems about the subject of happiness. Some think it is an elusive anecdote. Others think it is completely unattainable. I think both are slightly hoodwinked.

Here is what Abraham Lincoln thought about it.

Said he, “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” I can agree with that. Said Aristotle, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.”

It seems he agrees with our former President pretty much.

One of my favorite Actors, Harrison Ford says this.

“Being happy is something you have to learn. I often surprise myself by saying, ‘wow, this is it. I guess I’m happy. I got a home I love a career that I love. I’m even feeling more and more at peace with myself.’ If there’s something else to happiness, let me know. I’m ambitious for that, too.”

Says comedian Bob Newhart,

“Oh God, enjoy it.”

The following quote is one that this old man has no trouble identifying with. It comes from Christopher Morley who said it this way.

“Cherish all your happy moments: they make a fine cushion for old age.”

YOU CAN HAVE HAPPINESS, LEW...I RAN OUT OF IT A LONG TIME AGO. WHAT TAKES ME THROUGH FROM DAY TO DAY AND PUTS THAT SMILE ON MY FACE WHEN I DON'T FEEL LIKE SMILING IS...JOY! AS THE OLD HYMN GOES, '...THIS JOY I HAVE THE WORLD DIDN'T GIVE IT TO ME...THE WORLD DIDN'T GIVE IT AND THE WORLD CAN'T TAKE IT AWAY...' HAPPINESS COMES FROM OUR CIRCUMSTANCES...DEPENDING WHAT'S GOING ON IN OUR LIVES...IT GOES AND IT COMES, BUT JOY IS ALWAYS THERE. GOOD OR BAD...HIGH OR LOW...IN OR OUT...IT'S THERE...'COME DOWN' FROM THE FATHER ON HIGH. SO, YES...HAPPINESS IS ILLUSIVE, IT'S A 'FAIR WEATHER' FRIEND AND IT WILL DO UNTIL THE 'REAL' THING COMES ALONG, WHICH IS 'HIS' PURE JOY. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS. LOVE & FAITH... Love those quotes Lew! How true.I guess I would say happiness is seeing and feeling our own soul and another persons soul. Being open to the will of God and following it with faith. Yep- guess that's what I would say. How I long to do both of those goals. With Love, Cindy
