Pass on the good deeds done to you. The world will be a better place.
The other day, my husband, Vito, did some shopping at Costco for some last minute items needed for our son’s birthday party that same evening. Upon arriving home, Vito discovered his wallet was missing. Immediately, he realized that he must have driven off with the wallet sitting on the roof of the car. Vito placed it there as he loaded the groceries in his back seat. Unfortunately, he drove off with the wallet free to fly in the wind, along with a check book, credit cards, and driver’s license. He returned to Costco to leave our phone number with their service desk before retracing every area of the parking lot. The wallet was nowhere to be found. Cancelling all the credit cards, as well as the checking account, was a painstaking thought. Suddenly, hosting a birthday celebration became the furthest thing from our minds. Just a short while after returning from the Costco parking lot search, however, a white van pulled in front of our home.
A wonderful woman came to the door with the missing wallet in her hand. We were so thankful for this individual’s thoughtful good deed, we offered to pay her $50 for her trouble. She adamantly refused any such token of our gratefulness, going on to tell us she was paying it forward from a similar incident which happened to her a few days prior. She explained that she was at the bank withdrawing a substantial amount of money, which went missing somewhere between the there and home. Just after her frantic realization, the bank called to say that her money had been found and turned in by another banking customer.
Paying it forward is a way of making the world a better place each and every time it is done. Hearing negativity in the news and everywhere else can make us begin to doubt the integrity of people in this day and age. What that woman had done by returning my husband’s wallet, reminded us that there are good people in this world who go out of their way to just do the right thing. I know that we will be paying forward what was done for us at the very first presented opportunity, only to hope it carries on.
