Gothic Horror author Nickolaus A. Pacione is compiling an anthology that's a sequel to his first nonfiction anthology entirely. This is going to be a call that's not for the faint of heart.

The title of the anthology will be announced in private but this is what I am looking for.  Dark tinged creative nonfiction written in a first person style.  I am looking for stories that have a vein that could give the fictional horror counterparts a run for their money.  I got one submission so far for this and hoping I can employ the memoir section to get this going. I am looking for stories between 2000-10,000 words with an ideal of 3000-8000 words for this one.  Dark subject matter is the thing I am encouraging here. Near death experiences,  close calls, health scares, facing the horror of mother nature, and true paranormal accounts are the order of the day for this anthology.
I am not looking for excerpts of memoirs for this book but looking for short stories or vignettes that are in the 3000 word range for this.  I want them to be horrific in nature and there is a publisher I am looking to send this to when it gets done.  The book is going to be a present for a publisher who just got in the publishing game after inheriting the company from his mother’s passing. I am looking for a distinct Gothic voice with this sort of thing, something that would call to mind Mick Mercer or another writer who has a book out there about being a bouncer at a Goth club.
I am looking for the stories to carry the scares with the anthology as strong as the fictional counterparts.  Think what if H.P. Lovecraft wrote true paranormal accounts or Edgar Allan Poe wrote a near death experience story that really happened.  The anthology will be a sequel to a smaller anthology I edited in 2006 and been planning to edit a sequel of this anthology for quite some time.  The deadline of the anthology is when filled.  I will be either having a publisher publish the anthology or have it produced myself.
The anthology will go to press when I have 260-270 pages.  The more people who submit to the anthology the better -- think what I did with An Eye In Shadows in terms of the dark subject matter in that book.  I am looking for the stories of being bullied for this one and the horror stories that go around the whole thing of social media too.   I do not take anything that falls into the alternative romance category at all -- no sexual content because if it was included in this book it would be borderline pornographic.
I want to send the printed anthology to Weird Tales for them to read and the more I get from a background or PublishAmerica background for this anthology. The better that everyone will be. This will be the first real anthology I am announcing on It will be listed under the memoir section or horror section when it is done and completed.  I will be enlisting a horror artist to get the artwork for the cover, and encourage the writers to include their photographs and Gothed out for the pictures (or at least dressed in full black or subcultural.)
The e-mail address to send the stories to will be unclefossil (at) as a .doc, .docx, .rtf, .abw, .odt, .wps, and .sdw. I am editing the anthology using Open Office but doing grammar edits on MS Word -- I am looking to see who’d be willing to go dark as the horror writers for this one.  I promised an anthology, and this would be the thing I will have available for them -- then have someone come in and do the introduction when it’s published. Authors will get a pdf of the anthology when done if I do this myself.  If I work with another publisher they can help me get the contributor copies to everyone, and it would be trying to make the book average out 260 pages including introduction, author bios, and the body of anthology. I will include the pictures of the authors with the bio section of the book.  True paranormal accounts work the best in these kind of anthologies or the health scare that unfolds to be a real life horror story.
I was talking about the idea of this kind of anthology to Chris of the Edgar Allan Poe museum and what I would do is make the anthology a 6.21 x 9.14 trade paperback format and use a traveling typewriter font with the stories.  I would have the font set at 8.5 point for the stories to appear like they rival the mass market with the anthologies.  This is the thing that I might do under the Author’s Den marketplace.  I might have my account under my lakefossilpress gmail account rigged for this one, and invest in an IBSN where it would be a published by you feature for the book. Then will have someone design a full wraparound cover for the anthology. I’ve been publishing dark memoir type stories in the magazine for quite awhile too and if the story is way too dark for publication in other markets that is the market for this anthology.
I was going to have Tabloid Purposes as the AuthorsDen only anthology but the writers on wanted a piece of the action, that is the case with the new anthology I am editing right now -- something that would be going to a museum when it is finished. This book will be sent to the publisher I am doing the present for to wish him luck as a publisher.

I will consider stories from being in an asylum as consideration for this because I am writing a book about my time in 12 Kellogg and my book Dirty Black Winter has the story in the pages of the book. If you want a way to gauge the stories -- read Dirty Black Winter and this would give you an idea what I have in mind because there are 9 true stories in the book. The kind of thing that would give the writers on a real run for their money because I believe real life is stranger than or more frightening than fiction.
I produced an anthology in 2006 with true stories called More Frightening Than Fiction and that was just under 100 pages on a 6 x 9 trade paperback. I want to make this anthology a sequel to that one. I know dark subject matter might be intimidating for those who come from a memoir background, but that had been the staple of my entire years I’ve been with this site. For the longest time Author’s Den was asking about an anthology and some writers want on a project like this -- well when I do it, there is one thing that it would happen and it would be a very dark book.
The weird and darker the story is, the more I want the thing. I am already gearing up to publish a few from here with the anthology I am editing right now and this one anthology I’ve been planning was one that I wanted to do just as I found out April Derleth passed away.  I am looking for those who came from a gang background to tell their stories too with this anthology or those who had the drug background that the horrors became too intense for them -- so with those who escaped from the occult too. The darker Christian testimonies are perfect for this because I want a vehicle for the Christians to be disturbing and graphic.  Think if you were the neighbor of the woman who stabbed her husband 200 times and seen the hand emerging from the dirt after she buried him.
I am looking to make this in the higher end of the 200 page category. I would be happy with 200-250 pages too.  I am looking to make this book either the A5 or Royal Trade paperback because it has the white paper and the photos will come out a bit richer.  I will save the pictures as a .png file for optimization in the book and anthology. I might have the bio before the story with the picture -- i am doing the .pdf as a 1000 dpi and uploading from a public computer but have everything with the ISBN done before even working on the book.
I will have the pictures arranged where the bio of the author is on the bottom of the photograph and will be done in a way where it would be like it would appear in a picture frame. The fonts I will use will appear in the graphics because I am doing this in a way where the fonts are able to be printed well after the formats are in place.
The memoirists in the horror genre was Ambrose Bierce and Algernon Blackwood, maybe even Richard Matheson too. I know what I seek for this and it’s not going to be an easy book to do for those who write memoirs but everything I do as an editor is a challenge for writers.  From ruling out sex and other kinds of content -- barring some of it outright from the git-go. There are some out there that wanted my blood for saying no to this content or those kind of writers doing it. It would incite some hatred for me but at the same time gain some respect outside the horror circles for doing this.
You’ve seen weird menace fiction in my magazine, I am looking to put an anthology together where horror writers can actually mine the book for ideas for their fiction.  Since I take a lot from real life in my Gothic Horror fiction, and gave Connie C. Wilson input on the rewrite for her story coming out in my anthology I am editing currently. The story immortalized my old address and she took some ideas from a story I sent her too, which came from the input of reading that story came one hell of a ghost story that was expanded from a 700 word story.
I want to share my momentum with a lot of writers on this website because it was because of this web site along with the help of’s old incarnation, I was able to break out there as a published author. I want to give writers the chance that Terry Vinson helped me accomplish on the eve of my 28th birthday.
I don’t want sexually graphic stories here, but if you lived next door to a serial killer and was blindsided by the smell of the bodies next door -- I do want to hear about that. IF you have the strange story about dealing with being on social media, go ahead and tell your story in this anthology too.  The minimum word count is listed above at 2000 words. The story for the anthology that I wrote is done, and showed this to Joe R. Lansdale and he gave me some remarkable praise over the thing -- I am looking for the stories that will grab the reader by the throat here. I want the reader saying, “Oh that is really fucked up that happened to the writer” or “Really! No Shit!”
It is that kind of thing that comes to mind and I will encourage writers to do their try out on the neely reformed Shadow of Darkness on with a separate story from the actual entry in the anthology writing a dark tinged true story in the content management section. I will look over the story there and will send the author an invitation to submit.  The idea of what I want and how to gage it is read “I Want To See You In Black” on here.
It’s easy to be dark when doing fictional stories but when doing true stories that are dark like that -- people get nervous about telling these kind of stories because they would get a little personal.  I am not looking for shock for shock’s sake here but I will look for stories that are downright shocking at times for this. I am not doing this kind of anthology for shock value though I have owned books out of shock value. The one book that I have that’s pure shock value is a cook book that Shane Bugbee and a serial killer wrote together.
