They Call Me Illegal
By Debora Reynolds
Not "rated" by the Author.
Immigration Reform NOW!!!!!
Dedicated To the numerous, nameless, who choose to endure
They call me illegal!
I do not steal assault or kill! Am I not a man?
A human being?
Doesn’t my existence alone, guarantee my right to be?
To be equal, to have a job? a home? Family and friends?
But they call me illegal!
They say I am less than, no relevance is the shade of my skin or country of origin, simply paperwork!
I did not come to America by cover of darkness, no underground tunnel; I did not sneak across or get smuggled over the border.
Seven years ago, my lifelong dream came true !
America, where money grows on trees! The land of opportunity was about to become my home!
I opened my eyes in New York City. With Visa and Passport, nestled securely in my back pocket, I made my way to my Embassy, to make my proper introductions to America.
Within a few days i found some of "my people". a few days more, i found my first job. Proud was the first English word in my vocabulary.
Proud of whom i am, Proud of the life i am making.
Proud to know, that i am a worker in America and my family will never know hunger again!
Yet they call me illegal!
A confusion of paperwork, lack of understanding, lack of English.
Expiration dates, expire
Asylum, Refuge Status, Marriage for a green card or suffering.
As a proud man i must retain my honor and endure.
