The choice of profession is no ordinary matter and should be given serious thought before deciding which profession is best suited for the person in question. Different kinds of professions require different kinds of individuals. One must know whether to enter the business world, the court of law, the medical profession or any other before joining it.
A court of law is like a hospital in some ways. It is meant to bring back to health a person who feels that he has suffered injustice. Injustice can create distress and anxiety that may lead to physical disorders like hypertension and even cardiac arrest. It affects the mind, which in turn affects the body. Thus it can be fairly said that law courts save citizens from psychological ailments, like a sense of alienation or frustration, that result from the denial of justice.
One who enters the legal profession should do so only if he believes in justice. It is easy to become a counsel but it is difficult to be one. Knowledge of law should be used for positive ends. Using legal knowledge to bypass the law is similar to using medical know-how to cleverly kill a patient. The lawyer who does not save his clients from delayed justice is like a doctor who does not allow his patients to recover quickly.
The one who decides to be a doctor or lawyer should therefore be one who does not think of self-promotion or material gain alone. He should be a person who has the capacity to rise above self-interest. Earning money should not be his sole aim in life. If material gain is his primary reason for coming into either of these professions then he is likely to make neither a good doctor nor a good lawyer. Such a person should rather take to a business where minting money alone allows him to lead a guilt-free existence.
