No holiday in Ireland is complete without visiting the Waterford Crystal factory in Waterford. Originally opened in 1783, the factory has seen long periods of closure, bankruptcies and troubles throughout its long history. It opened again in 2010 and now melts 750 tonnes of crystal a year. A guided tour of the factory is free. You can see craftsmen at work and gaze in wonder at crystal teddybears and trophies, chandeliers and chariots, angels and animals.
The only downside is the price which begins at thirty euros; out of reach for the ordinary backpacker or holidaymaker with a limited budget. On the other hand, they deliver to your destination of choice, allaying fears of your purchase getting broken during transit as they will refund your money or deliver another copy. They always make at least two of everything.
