Pregnant pause.
Today’s lesson my good English students, the pregnant pause.
For our writing purposes, this is writing which leaves a gap which the reader will absolutely fill with a load from his or her imagination.
My example:
It was a fairly warm summer day. Determined to stay in good shape I was doing my power walk around a local park. The park has about a ¾ mile loop which includes a significant hill. I had gone around the entire loop 3 times and was climbing the last part of the last lap. I felt really good about this. I had been exercising hard and would be at my finish line very soon. I was about as fit as I have ever been, down to a size 34 waste and with great muscle definition in my legs.
Once I got to the level ground at the top of the climb I eased up my pace and walked beside a ball field over to a set of bleachers where I like to stretch out.
I was not the slightest bit winded, but what I saw at the bleachers made me forget to breathe at all.
Here was the most remarkably fit red head I had ever seen. She was perfection of the female form, a blue tank top and blue gym shorts, a perfect tan, that red hair to die for. She looked at me and her blue eyes could have made me faint. I got close enough to see beads of sweat over her perfect skin. I had to breathe, but didn’t want the difficulty to be too obvious.
She turned to me, and she said, “You know, sometimes I need a man so bad I think I would take whatever a dog drags off the street.”
PREGNANT PAUSE…
