The sooner a child is introduced to books the better

I believe in early literacy experiences......
I feel strongly about the importance of reading and writing both from a creative and functional point of view.
Having worked in the education sector for many years, I developed a strong set of information for parents when it comes to early literacy.
This has often stood me in good stead for the commercial and academic side of my role as a writer. In this blog post, I would like to share some of that information I collected from my experience as an educator and academic writer.
It's my firm belief that the sooner children are introduced to reading the better.
So for anyone out there thinking about how to introduce books to their baby here are some tips gathered from the years of academic research and working with parents.

Young babies will try and grab the book and put it in their mouth. It’s natural. Babies learn through their touching and tasting so cloth books, read in the bath books and board books are good. You can even buy books for babies with handles and teething rings or rattles on them
When you read to your baby, read the book from the front cover, and talk about the pictures. Stop when your baby is tired or loses interest. Try again later. It is important to start baby off with all the “mechanics” of reading such as front to back, turning a page, looking at the illustrations (for clues to the words for later)
Books for very young babies will have bright simple pictures with very few words and sometimes textures to touch. It has been discovered through scientific research that babies love books with other babies in them, a number of books are now available which use photographs of babies and very often a mirror page (non-glass) as babies love to see themselves too
Make the noises of the characters in the book.
Choose songs made into books, and rhymes or actions are great for baby. Babies love the sound of your voice and being close to you, they like the same book over and over again.
Read aloud to your baby everyday and read over and over again the ones they love the most. This has been found to encourage reading readiness and a love of books, it has been proven by endless academic research that early exposure to books, and print gives children a huge advantage when they begin formal school and provides the foundation for life long literacy.
A couple of years ago I was working with a not for profit group in Australia; my role was to promote Early Literacy, and it was close to my heart so was an enjoyable task.
During this time I wrote lots of tip sheets in the form of brochures so if there are any parents out there interested in good tips to give their child a head start in Literacy. These are still downloadable free in PDF form on the site,
