A Sense Of Wonder 7/18/2011 7:16:39 AM The vast majority of we adults do not examine our world very closely. We all do this as children, of course -- from the moment we are able to open our eyes and see, the wonders begin, because everything is new. But the wonders don't last long. As we learn (or think we learn), we conceptualize, categorize and pass judgment. This, we decide, is worth knowing, while that is not. This is important, that is not. This I should pursue, but that is not worth the trouble. I love this, but that is to be avoided at all cost.
Not all of this is bad. We must have our priorities. The evil arises when we conclude that our thoughts, assessments and judgments are the way the world is.
The more we assume we know (all too frequently, invalidly), the more we abandon that true treasure of childhood: a sense of wonder. Poor, courageous Galileo was nearly put to death for suggesting that the Earth was not the center of the solar system. The rest of the world knew that it was. At the time the Bible was written down, the world was known to be flat.
