Documentary James Baldwin A Voice For A People
7/22/2011 11:15:10 AM

James Baldwin's entire life as an American Literary icon is presented for the first time in this documentary A Voice For A People. James Baldwins novels, plays and provoking oratory awoke America to a race of people unseen and unheard for over one hundred years.
James Baldwin revealed to America it's own moral failure. Writer and novelist James Baldwins talents for the written word were discovered by Orilla Miller, a junior high teacher in the New York City school system during the 1940's. Miller who was white said of Baldwin that he could out write anyone in the school. When Baldwin moved on to Boys High in New York other mentors noticed the talents of the young Baldwin and help guide him to his future international success. Born in adverse proverty in New York City Baldwin never knew his real father.
Numerous childhood experiences shaped James Baldwins writings and his future. After exstensive research on Baldwin A Voice For A People suddenly took shape on the pages of my computer. Originally conceived to include actors playing the principal roles of the particular mentors, advocates, and people in general who overtly affected Baldwins future writings.
That concept was scratched when we saw archival footage surrounding Baldwins youth and experiences in the New York City and the New Jersery area. Baldwins comittment too and retreat from the church. After being ordained as a minister at age fourteen which formed the basis of his now famous novel Go Tell It On The Mountain. His departure to France and the numerous reasons behind this move were also discovered and changed our view of how best to tell the incredible true story of Baldwins youth, career life changing contribution to American social values. After all the pen is mightier than the sword and one picture speaks a thousand words. For each and every student, teacher, historian, educated individual and concerned citizen of the world who has the opportunity to purchase or see this documentary on James Baldwin there life with be enlightened by this educational documentary about the most influential American writers of the twentieth century. James Baldwin was the only American that the Kennedy administration asked the question of "What do Negroes really want." Baldwin said "There's a bill that must be paid." Fortunately James Baldwin lived long enough to see civil rights admendments made to the contituition of the United States. While at the height of his literary power Baldwin was shunned by black civil rights leaders at a crucial time in the movement. Undeterred his words moved a nation to elevate it's humain and moral perspective. As I wrote this documentary I began to understand Baldwins narrative power. The effect of which changed America. James Baldwin was truely A Voice For A People.
