Clocks Fall Back

If one is new to the English language one might wonder what on earth it means that the clocks fall back.
Changing the time of day by one hour both spring and fall came into being long before I was born. Both in England and here in Canada (except for the province of Saskatchewan which never changes its summer hours and therefore never has to change them back in the fall), where I have lived all my adult life.
I really have never seen the point of changing the clocks so as to give us more daylight. In actual fact there is no more daylight than we already have no matter how we tinker with the hands of the clock. If we want to have more daylight available to us in the evening or the morning we just have to adjust the time of our getting up or going to bed. Surely we don't all have to suffer because some people want to lounge about in bed.
There is always someone at these two times of the year who miss out on the fact that it is change the clocks time and these people will inevitably be late to work or church, or arrive an hour too early if it's the other end of the year and wonder why the church door isn't open yet or be too early for their shift.
Why don't we just call the whole thing off. Get up the same time every day of the year, start the same time to work, and go to church the same time every week.
However, it does seem to be the time to change the batteries in our smoke alarms and CO2 detectors. Does that mean if we forget to turn the clocks back we will also forget to change these all-important life-saving batteries?
