Names and Titles, Questions Answered
11/10/2011 6:54:56 PM
John Howard Reid answers some questions regarding the finding and using of names and titles in literary works.
What about foreign names?

Yes, there are plenty of foreign character names in the book, "HOLLYWOOD CLASSICS Title Index to All Movies Reviewed in Books 1 - 24". Here is an essential book for authors and writers, worth its weight in gold, yet you can buy it at Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Apple, etc. for only 99 cents!

To get back yo your question, right at the beginning of the Review section are films like "The Angel Wore Red" and "The Appointment" which provide a fair selection of foreign names. While most of the films detailed in this particular book are American or British, an entry like "The Ten Commandments" provides hundreds of names at a glance. In fact, you would find sufficient character names in just this one movie to last you a lifetime.

How can you tell if a particular title will appeal to readers and potential buyers?

A good indication would be to add up how often that title has been used. For example, if you think that "Night" is a word that should figure in your title, you look up "Night" in the book and you'll find that no less than 21 movie titles begin with that word. "Night" is evidently a word with great consumer appeal. And here is a movie title, "Night Holds Terror" which fits your novel or story perfectly. The book tells you the movie was made way back in 1955. Therefore there is no reason why you can't use it.
