Mike's Bird dog Stories
1/13/2012 9:56:17 PM
It was a wonderful day two days ago. I stepped out of my car hoping for nothing and yet hundreds of Canada geese trumpet their way across the sky. They usually form the inverted V-shape formation while they trumpet along towards the east. Some groups would fly and catch up with the other group while the other groups were left behind. I watched them for some minutes before heading inside the Costco store at Vancouver.

That evening, Mike was at Greater Trumps once more. He came after Trivia, when crowds were just about to go home. (Trivia Night that night was crowded. There were about 6 groups that had gathered; and in one of the groups, a contestant from the TV show, Jeopardy, was there. The show he was on was on that night. We beat them though. We got 22 of 25 questions. His group got 19 of 25.) He was there to collect some items from Bridget after which he sat beside me and told me this funny dog story.

Mikeís dad had a best friend, and his name was Darey Green. Everyone called him Darey for Darryl. They went to medical school together and both his dad and Darey loves Pogo. (Darey died at about 55 years old.) They would sing and dance and both were drawn into it. Itís a pogo thing. There was also a poem by Walt Kelly they recite and it goes like this:

Pick a pock of peach pits
Pockets full of pie
Four and twenty blackbirds
Baked until they cry.

(He promised to Facebook me the rest of the poem but until now, he hadnít, so I have to stop here. I was told that this is a famous and funny poem.)

Darey was a duck hunter with his dog, Daisy. He normally went into the park to train Daisy to retrieve ducks without biting into the duck too hard. But Daisy was somewhat already trained. Gordy, Dareyís son also went to the park. One day, when they opened the back of their car, Daisy run out fast and away leaving them to wonder where the dog might have gone to. They searched for the dog until they found her. This was a no-no. So they re-trained Daisy so that she wouldnít just dash away. They attached a collar so that if the dog did something wrong, they would just zap her and the dog will behave. So after three months, all had thought that they and the dog would be happy hunting again. By this time, they thought that the dog will know what to do. They thought that they could go hunting again. But that wasnít the case.

Again, when Darey and Gordy opened the back door of the car, Daisy dashed out of the car and of to the marshes she went. Daisy was a great dog but it seemed that she neglected to heed the wishes of her masters. So, Darey zapped Daisy once. From a distance, the dog rose out of the marsh, his ears went sideways and I can just imagine, she just thought why on the earth was she zapped. It became so funny that everytime Darey zapped Daisy, she would jump out of the marsh and her ears would go sideways.

It was so hilarious that Darey kept doing this. All those guys were falling down laughing (including Mike, now. I can just imagine a birddog getting zapped and like a moment in time the dog was transfixed to being like a statue jumping out of the marsh with her ears that go straight to the side. It was indeed funny.) It was the last time Daisy went hunting with them. When Daisy canít be their bird dog, they got a dog named Ben. They would jokingly call Ben, Sven or some name similar to Ben. Ben was a different type of dog. Surely, he was still a bird dog but he has a small quirk. Whenever he doesnít get his slice of toasted bread, he got surly.
