Sleeping and Dreaming
2/4/2012 9:57:18 PM

I just love sleeping; lying in bed, lounging about among the sheet and my down blanket or watching television as I winked towards closing my eye and drifting off to some world I nor anyone else knew about. I wallowed in soft pillows like sinking in a vast ocean where I did not have any fear of drowning. Almost every night (and sometimes, day) I indulged myself in this predicament. In my grown-up years, I slept in a futon. I bought this futon thinking that it might be the most comfortable bed I will ever sleep in. But soon, I experienced back pains. But soon after I purchased my condominium, I bought myself a bed from Pottery Barn. It was a queen size bed, low and made of wood. I also purchased a down comforter. These factors made sleeping more manageable and comfortable.

But sleeping in bed was only one among the ways I sleep. I slept at Starbucks, for one…sitting down. I worked on whatever I was working on and this sudden urge to wink to sleep took over me. I bowed my head, covered my eyes with my hands or my cap and went to sleep. And then I dreamed, a short one at that, but dreamed. Then I awaken just as Clark was passing me by and he would tease me for sleeping.

I slept standing up, too. Remember that blog about my trip to Copenhagen, Denmark? Well, since I did not have any place to sleep, I slept by the doorway of a bakery hearing jovial Danes ending their day (or night.) I even heard the clanging of pots and pans. And when I had awakened for a moment, I saw the police pass by. They did not show their lights upon me so I slept in complete harmony with the cold and frigid air. I placed a towel over my head so that I would not get sick.

And then the dreaming began. After my mini-stroke, I did not dream for a long time. But nowadays, I regained the power to dream. My dreams were varied. There were memorable dreams I could allude to. One that I can remember was when I was a child. This was way back in Manila. I dreamed that I was skiing in a steep slope with all the adventure associated with skiing. When I reached the bottom of the mountain, I discovered that the mountain was just a tiny mole hill; a piece of dust all piled up. It was such a romantic notion that what I experienced was a dream within a dream.

There were also fantastic dreams of flying and fighting evil things or people. I first experienced flying by standing in the middle of our backyard. I flapped my feet and I climbed upwards. I flapped them again and I ascended, and again I flapped them. Soon I was so high that I can see our house and the fields around it. The height scared me.

One thing that scared me was a dream when I was in a public urinal. I felt someone or something was behind me and when I turned around, I simply woke up. I just didn’t wake up. I have awoken with a start. Oh boy, even when I am just writing about it and recalling this dream, I have shivers down my spine and goose pimples were flaring up.

Two months ago, I dreamed that I was a vampire. But then it was not I who was scared. I scared the hell out of whoever was with me…in my dream.
