Predicament: The Garden Party

It was a hectic morning. We were all waiting for each other even though we were all dress up. Dena and Bryan were readying their children. Lauren was shuttling back and forth from Michael’s home and our home bringing with her all sorts of items. And I took mom and Taylor in the car and of we went to the strip mall to pick up the lechon (roasted pig) and other food for the party. It was the engagement party of Lauren and Michael and everyone was excited about it.
The last time I was in Vallejo, Michael proposed to Lauren. That was two Christmases ago, I think. All of us were watching a movie. Mom, Ate and Hector, Taylor and I were there. We were all there when Lauren asked Ate (big sister) aside. She declared that Michael proposed and suddenly, I heard this guffaw and commotion. I stood up and inquired. And soon the entire room was abuzz with this happy news. Lauren showed her engagement ring and everyone was just dazzled with this spectacle. Of course Michael knelt on one knees and ask Lauren for her hand. Of course Michael told my sister of his intention the day before, in the Christmas party at Hector’s parent’s place.

Michael is a very cool dude. He is kind and understanding. And for the way he treated Lauren…and the family…it seems right that he and Lauren would come together. We were very happy about Michael. I remember their first date together because I was there. They had a dance at school and I was Lauren’s chaperone. They were very young, then; Lauren was 14 and Michael was 16 (I think. It was a long time ago.) They met when they were both swimming competitively in a swim club.
When the party was about to commence, Taylor and I stood by the gate to usher in the guest. Guests abounded; they were friends of Lauren and Michael’s, relatives of Michael and our relatives also attended, even Lauren’s father, Alfredo, was in attendance. Food flowed while the guest drowned in refreshments. We contributed food but the main courses were cooked and served by Michael’s mom. There was an assortment of cakes that sweetened our taste buds. And there were lots of conversation and mingling going on. When the evening came, candle lights on top of small tables graced the party. There were bonfires also lighted in two places. It was indeed elegant.
After a while, guests began to leave. Slowly the party slowed and had diminished to a small group who helped clear out everything. Some foods were given back to us. We took our cars appropriately, happy in the thought that Lauren and Michael were now together. Everyone left joyful in this engagement.
What can I say? Lauren was the happiest woman, that day. She was beautiful and gracious at the say time. I know that I will miss her when she is gone from my sister’s home but at least she is with a man she loves and I am cool with that. My Lauren, my favorite niece.
