Background Behind Social Studies
4/7/2011 9:19:24 AM
Well I promised to give a little insight into the true events behind Social Studies. I was a history teacher myself and before that a student aide, which meant I helped the special ed. students with their school work. During that time I worked for a large high school with the layout of the place very similar to the high school in Social Studies. During that time from 2001-02 I witnessed a tragedy myself on the campus of the school. A student had taken his own life. Seeing the students in the halls, after the news broke, with their eyes filled with tears, most of them for the first time in their lives experiencing something so tragic was when it hit me that these killings that happened in high schools across the country were real. This was not just some story we heard on the news, felt it was tragic then days later moved on with our lives. These events affected lives, destroyed lives. A story like this had to be told, had to be explained, not just used by the media for a lead in story for better ratings. At the time I had just finished my vampire novel and was debating what to work on next, and then the answer became self-evident. This was different than the stories I wanted to write, Social Studies was now something I had to write. Tomorrow I will talk about the inspiration I had to write the characters that would become the killers in the story.
