Fighting CPS 11/21/2011 2:51:45 PM The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. Occasionally, I will report helpful tips and web sites with advice on fighting CPS. To Spank, or Not to Spank; That Is the Question
This issue is back in the news and opinions are flying across the internet in response to one young woman’s “coming out” against her father in a UTube video (a case which leaves me wondering: Who was recording that video? And Why? And Why wait so long to “expose” that incident?) It is also back in the media because of Pastor Michael Pearl’s book, To Train Up a Child (being criticized because a few parents went “off the deep end” with the book and abused their children to death.)
The problem of answering this question is that no matter what one says, it is not the “correct” answer.
The concept of what constitutes a “good spanking” was on a psychological evaluation our daughter and son-in-law had to answer in a survey given by Walker Counseling, an agency responsible for evaluating their “fitness” as parents, whether they would “need” counseling, and whether or not the state would return custody of their son to them. They were told there were, “no right answers,” but our daughter’s response as to what they meant by “a good spanking” (a quick swat on the back side versus a severe beating) was one of the issues the agency involved used to prolong our case. (Recorded on pages 110-112 of Fighting CPS)
Countless research studies, short and long term, have shown that children suffer no long-term effects from an occasional swat on the backside. Yet, people continue to advocate for NO spanking at all because some parents don’t know when to stop. It’s not all that different from the argument for/against gun control: “guns don’t kill people; people kill people.” Some parents “spank responsibly” and others turn spanking into beatings, continued abuse and murder.
What’s often forgotten in this argument is that for parents who opt not to spank at all, it is most important to use some other form of discipline/punishment when a child breaks a rule and to do so consistently.
This lack of any discipline and inconsistency in punishing, or not punishing, children was the subject of an article I wrote, “The Changing Scene of Discipline,” which was published in the Oct. 2011 issue of Recovering the Self: A Journal of Hope and Healing.
