The purpose of this blog is to provide updates on some of the cases I reported in my book (Fighting CPS: Guilty Until Proven Innocent of Child Protective Services Charges ISBN 9-780-9800061-6-2) that had not been resolved when the book went to press, and to report other cases where CPS is not working up to par. I’d also like to hear about cases in which Child Protective Services did the right thing so those cases can serve as examples of what should be done. Occasionally, I will report helpful tips and web sites with advice on fighting CPS.
With last week’s report of a child born into a family where there were definite problems with drug/alcohol and physical abuse, and Child Services was slow to act, or chose not to act (and situations like this happen all too often, too) it’s time to report on an organization whose purpose is to help those who have been abused and try to prevent future abuse: Child Help.
This organization has been around since 1959, trying to make a positive difference for children and adults. They have a national twenty-four-hour Child Abuse Hot Line: 1-800-4-A-CHILD and a web site with a ton of good information: www.childhelp.org and they are the leading non-profit for victims of abuse.
Under the tab for “help” one finds pages for kids, parents, professionals . . . Their focus is on prevention, intervention, and treatment. They have in-place programs in several states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Michigan, Tennessee, and Virginia. These programs include, but are not limited to, community centers and community outreach, homeless outr12each, foster care and group homes, “good touch/bad touch” educational programs, residential treatment facilities, advocacy centers and much more.
Their web site includes a section with heart-wrenching stories of abuse by adults who lived through abuse as children. The site has so many areas with tons of excellent information that one can only say to go to the site and spend a good amount of time exploring it and see how you can help yourself or someone you know.
