Down with compound fractional equations!
Why are our students not learning enough in many of our schools to be more literate? I blame it on those darn compound fractional equations. I remember having to study those obnoxious animals when I was in school, over fifty years ago. I thought their importance was way overblown at that time, 1952, and I tried to ignore them. I guess enough of them hid in my hair so they could expose themselves during test time. I don’t remember if I passed that test or simply ignored it.
They escaped from my life for forty years. If I had seen one during that time, I probably would have thought it was only a regular algebra thing trying to sexually expose itself. Anyway forty years later, that compound fractional equation (CFE) thing arose from the ashes and poked its tongue out at me again. I taught an algebra class for a GED student, who lacked only algebra to get her high school diploma. They raised their ugly faces again during that class and we went to the mat in a tug of war again. Maybe I won that match because that young lady passed the GED test. I thought those CFEs had finally disappeared from the face of the earth, where they belonged. But, was I fooled - they raised their ugly faces again.
Ten years ago, I decided to do my civic duty and be a substitute teacher at a local school. The call came at 6:30 one morning, and I had to be at the class at 7:30 - that same morning. Dutifully, I showed up on time, and was told I would be teaching a 6th grade math class, and that the teacher had left the lesson plans on her desk. Since she had scheduled her time off month’s ago, I had a logical question: why wasn’t I called the day before, so I could plan for the day - and understand the lesson plan. She was to be gone for two months. The school policy was not to call a substitute until the day needed. Wow! Anyway, guess what the lesson plan was for that day? Okay, don’t guess - we all know. That teacher was very smart and sneaky. She got out of town rather than face those dreaded CFEs.
After those 6th graders decided they couldn’t intimidate a mature man (okay, and old man) they got serious about pretending to realize CFEs were important. I also pretended they were important, and would be a major consideration in their success or failure in life. The one boy who was most obnoxious suddenly became my best buddy when I showed him step-by-step how easy it was to stare down those obnoxious CFEs.
The purpose for this story, which is true, is that many children who could be successful, happy, and productive, are driven from a real education and positive dreams by having to face compound fractional equations. Becoming literate with functional disciplines is far more important than compound fractional equations. I have never seen one outside a classroom, and I doubt if the reader of this post has ever seen one outside a classroom. Who needs one?
Then along came the Pythagorean theorem.
I wrote my education books to defend against these monsters who destroy real functional education.
