Christmas Time 12/9/2011 12:05:30 PM Christmas Day is just around the corner. At this time of year I remember all too clearly that Christmas Eve sixty-three years ago when my parents chose to hold a violent domestic break-up. For months my brother and I sensed that a storm was brewing between our parents. We were helpless in our situation.(If anyone one has read my memoir "Gaining a Sense of Self"I have described the event in the early pages of my book). my Since then, some of that fear about that Christmas Day still remains, especially when Christmas is just around the corner. Out of the corner of my eye I catch a glimpse of the Black Dog following my footsteps - ready to pounce.
While our children were with us I busied myself in shopping, writing cards, and cooking festive food. When the children were young, we teamed up with another couple and shared Christmas. For the most part, this was a good move until one occasion when I was transporting our roast duck to their place and the gravy spilled all over the car boot. I was so stressed that I came down with a massive migraine.
A physiotherapist told me that one way of avoiding the stress of Christmas was to have a cook-up on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day would be spent relaxing with family and eating left-overs.Ever since then we have adopted this practice and it has worked perfectly well.
Already I have attended three Pre-Christmas festivities with four more pencilled in the diary. A few of these activities stem from the writing groups I attend. So far, they have been joyful events.
For the first time in decades George and I will be away for Christmas and will be spending some time with our son and his fiancee. My contribution will be a boiled fruit cake I cooked and George's two bottles of Tasmania's finest vintage wines. I hope for a stress-free day. And for all you readers out there I wish you a Christmas warm with happiness, and new year filled with joy and positive outcomes.
