Choosing a subject for a blog ain't always a piece of cake.

Oh, Lord, I do wish I were not so excruciatingly aware of time. There is never enough of it, and every second of it I spend on doing “this” I am aware that I should be doing “that.” All the books I’ve not read…let alone written; all the friends and relatives to whom I should be paying far more attention, or visiting. The countless projects waiting patiently for me to finish…or start, to each one of which I have made a solemn promise to complete, lie scattered around me in actual or imagined piles and heaps, like dust bunnies. (And we won’t even mention my vow to clean the apartment.)
Monday morning becomes Sunday night, and I haven’t a clue as to where the 86,400 intervening seconds, or 9,800 minutes that comprise ever day have gone. But they go, largely vanished without a trace.
The blogs which I post here on AuthorsDen are taken from the 450-plus previously posted on my website. I try very hard, and have largely succeeded, to produce three of these blogs a week for the site, and you’d think, with a whole day between Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s blogs…and two whole days between Friday’s and Mondays, I’d have tons of time to write a new one. But right now it is coming up on 5 p.m. on a Sunday night, with a new blog scheduled for tomorrow morning (I try to post before 8 a.m. central time), and I not only haven’t a clue as to a specific subject to write about, but no idea of where to go to look for one.
There are few things harder than trying to come up with a good subject for a blog entry when, trying to get time to slow down enough to concentrate on something, the mind is blank. Panic tends to set in, opening the floodgates of random, disjointed thoughts which sweep across the landscape of my mind, carrying away everything in their path. And when the main rush has subsided, it leaves a trickle which can, if one is being very, very charitable, be called a “stream of thought.” I am being very, very charitable here.
Wildly rummaging through the grab bag of my mind for something to latch onto, I have the mental image of a grizzly bear in a mountain stream at the top of a waterfall, snapping at salmon as they try to make their way upstream. Me grizzly. Salmon thoughts. No luck catching one.
Like my character, Dick Hardesty (who is as I have often said and truly believe, an alternate-universe me) I have several mind voices which speak to me (not literally, in case you were getting worried). One is chiding me now for cheating you, pointing out with irrefutable logic that you came here to read something interesting, not to listen to me hedge, fudge, and obfuscate...which would make a great title for a law firm: Hedge, Fudge, and Obfuscate. And so my mind skips merrily from fractured thought to fractured thought and I, once again the grizzly, snap futilely at these salmon thoughts. (Directions: Blend in 47 assorted metaphors; beat until smooth.)
Now, what I should do, is simply highlight everything I’ve written so far here and hit “Delete”, then put a little box on the blog for tomorrow saying “Gone Fishing,” but we both know I won’t/can’t, simply because, total garbage though it may be, it went from my mind to my fingers to the computer screen and I am simply incapable of throwing away anything I have written.
Perhaps I will get up early tomorrow (Friday) morning, mind full of nice, firm, solid blog subjects and, choosing one, present it to you like a bouquet of tulips. Then I will simply put what I have written above in a mental envelope and file it somewhere.
And then again.....
