Grown, Picked and Canned in the USA

Without these labels, we’re all subject to some form of poisoning.
Consider this: American farmers were banned years and years ago from using DDT to spray their crops. DDT was found to be one of those insecticides that lingered longer than day old meatloaf in your system. People were chemically poisoned from the stuff and either died or suffered from lasting illnesses brought on by DDT. Pregnant women often gave birth to children with crippling birth defects. So it’s no wonder DDT was outlawed in the U.S.
However, on Dateline one night they showed South American laborers in fields where crops were slated to be exported to the U.S. spraying DDT. With heavy metal backpacks strapped on and handheld tubes leading from the metal monsters, they walked the rows in between the plants spraying each and every bud with poison. The worst part was that they were spraying in weather so hot the tanks swelled and sprang leaks. DDT liquid was shown running down the backs of the workers. Most of them didn’t last long in the fields or in life in general.
From then on whenever I came across fruits and veggies with labels from South American cities or anywhere else overseas, I didn’t buy them. Strangely enough, the fruit and veggies are no longer labeled. So I look for apples from Washington State and potatoes from Idaho. This is the only way I know of to be safe from harmful chemicals and I keep hoping the labels are honest—that the apples are truly from Washington State, the potatoes from Idaho and so on.
The reason for today’s rant is due to the news that unscrupulous manufacturers in China were sticking a chemical made from coal into the pet food that killed dogs and cats here in the United States. This revelation came from American food regulators who went to China to investigate, and who found that the substance is routinely added to animal feed as a fake protein. The substance, called melamine, is sold to companies that make animal feed by companies that sell melamine scrap to make animal feed. When tested, melamine, a cheap additive, resembles protein. But it isn’t. It’s a derivative of coal. You know, like in used for heating and it’s fed to animals worldwide and that includes dogs, cats, fish and so on.
The Chinese manufacturers can get away with this because there are no regulations banning anything you do with food in China. There are no laws stating what can and cannot go into something as simple as pet food so you only imagine the food slated for humans that comes from foreign countries.
Right now melamine is at the center of a recall of 60 million packages of pet food, after the chemical was found in wheat gluten linked this month to the deaths of at least 16 pets in the United States. And why pray tell was this found in our pet food here in the States? Because it’s the same old thing: money talks and you-know-what walks.
In other words, if a manufacturer here in the States can save a penny on each can of pet food by importing unsafe ingredients from other countries they’ll do it. The same goes with food meant for human consumption. The package or can or whatever your food comes in that’s sold here in the U.S. might claim that it was manufactured in one of the 48, but perhaps the ingredients weren’t. And therein lies the danger.
And I don’t believe that these scams are limited to just food and/or possibly imported beverages that are purposely ingested into the body. When you consider it, cosmetics are not even safe. When women and men apply deodorant and body sprays these products leech into the system the same as DDT leeched into South American workers’ systems. If those deodorants and body sprays contain unsafe imported ingredients, then using them is an unheard of risk along with everything else that’s imported.
Ridiculous you say? I’m being hysterical. In my novel Dark Secrets; White Lies, I came across a weed that grows wild in woods and fields here in the U.S. and in foreign nations. This weed causes hallucinations, confusion and is so toxic, that the mere act of touching its leaves can lead to death. The chemical is ingested through pores in your skin. I worked with a chemist and a physician on this one. In researching the weed, I discovered that a family of six perished here in the U.S. from adding the leaves to their salad because they didn’t think they were dangerous. I also came across a fashion model who was killed when someone ground up the leaves of the weed and blended it in with tea leaves for her nightly beverage break. That someone wisely wore gloves. And here we’re dealing with imports from countries who don’t care what’s considered dangerous and what isn’t.
So what exactly are we getting when we import whole foods such as fruits and veggies and hidden imports like additives from outside of the U.S.? Food manufacturers in this country aren’t the only ones using imported ingredients in canned, packaged and frozen foods. People buy spices that come from plants grown and processed outside of the U.S. and use them to flavor their food when cooking. What’s the story with the spices?
Are you worried yet? You should be. It’s time to shake up our whole system of importation and find out just exactly what we’re eating, lathering onto our bodies and otherwise importing from unregulated countries outside of the U.S. And this shake up needs to start with manufacturers who want to line their pockets with the proverbial twenty pieces of gold at the cost of our health and safety and that of our pets by using unsafe, imported ingredients.
