Notes on Batman Begins 6/15/2005 9:22:12 PM Notes on the current film. A purpose of this film is go to back to the roots of the character of Batman and the comic book and show how he became a caped-crusader with personal demons. The first half of the movie focuses on that journey, with some action scenes. The 2nd half of the film is mostly action. Well-done, but special effects are becoming less special.
Michael Caine as Alfred offers a steady current of droll humor. Christian Bale as Batman brings an intensity to the role. Morgan Freeman as a scientist who helps Bruce Wayne also supplies some humor.
The Batmobile in this film is more like an armored Humvee than the sleek rocket on wheels from earlier films.
The storytelling is serious and often somber, about the issue of going from being fearful to fear-inspiring by facing personal demons. The seriousness won't play well for children expecting one of the earlier, more campy Batman films.
