Whew! what a job! 5/28/2010 11:53:42 AM freelancing online is interesting and this isn't a scam. If you want to work, this is the way! I freelance on elance. That sounds pretty much like a bumper sticker, doesn't it? Well, it is a job I can do anyplace in the world as long as I have computer access.
You have to bid on the jobs and I pretty much stick to the lower echelon of bidding. It isn't every job where you can sit in your recliner and work. I really enjoy it, usually. The worst it gets it so have to write 500 words about the same subject in 10 different ways. I can admit that I really know more than I had ever hoped to about tattoos, bathroom fixtures, curtain rods, and other assorted subjects. Somehow when I had aspired to be a writer I never pictured myself doing it this way. Of course, computers weren't even invented then so how could I know?
I do get really interesting projects, too. I can't tell you what they are; it's part of the contract. That part doesn't bother me at all. I could care less if someone knows I wrote the course that is being taught or the articles in the magazines. I have learned long ago that fame is fleeting and is only worth the good feeling it gives you at the time. I actually prefer to ghost for someone else. That way if the subject matter is something controversial MY friends aren't looking at ME weird. LOL, writing under a non-disclosure contract is only a problem to writers who need recognition. Personally, I think being at a tv studio at 4 AM to get hair and makeup for a 3 minute spot is highly over rated....unless it's on Fox and Friends.
I can highly recomend elance. They make certain the "buyers" pay the providers for the work that is done. Their payment plans are checked out and guaranteed. You can get paid by check, through a credit card from a paymaster company, or by deposit into an existing Paypal account. You get a 1099 at the end of the year to file with your taxes (no you can't get out of that).
