Speaking of angels........ 11/19/2007 2:48:32 AM This entry is an add-on to the poem I posted earlier tonight, when it was still Sunday. It's actually Monday morning now. When I can't get back to sleep, I feel like the Princess and the Pea, except the peas are countless, and I finally get up.
Well, speaking of angels, the Bible angels -- REAL angels --- are so drastically different from the many depictions of angels we find all around us! I really like the cute little angels; in fact, I bought 9 or 10 pretty angel night-lights to give as gifts. There are cute angels, baby angels, snowman angels, sexy angels (believe it or not), dog, cat, and cow angels...the majority of angel figures have feminine features.
In the Bible, there are several kinds of angels, but believe me, not one of them is feminine or babyish! Power and mystery accompany the angels as they obey the commands of God in heaven and on earth.
Billy Graham has a good book on angels, not too long, but it covers a lot of territory.
He tells a few stories about angels in our time. Corrie ten Boom, a Jewish-Christian woman who came through the Holocaust, was being processed into one of those infamous camps with her sister Betsy (who died there). She hid her little Bible rolled up in their woolen underwear. Even though guards were searching everyone and noticing every tiny bulge, they never even stopped Corrie to investigate the large bulge hidden under her flimsy dress. She had asked God to send angels to hide her from the guards.
I believe God had an angel there to save my 21-year-old husband Bill when he fell 54 feet from a church tower he was painting. There was a 2-inch iron railing by the steps leading into the church. Bill's jaw hit the railing, breaking it at the juncture--the railing, not his jaw! His co-worker was astonished when he saw Bill get up and walk. He had been afraid to approach him, fearful Bill had not survived the fall.
Bill had a few teeth loosened, and a few superficial cuts; spent 3 days in the hospital, mostly for observation. I think he was in shock when I first saw him in the hospital, but he sure was alive! He had 6 weeks Workmen's Comp. and went back to work.
At the same time, in the same hospital, a man died after falling about 6 feet from his porch.
Now, about Michael and Gabriel -- I don't expect to have either of them assigned to me personally.
Gabriel visited Daniel visibly in chapter 9 of the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament of the Bible. He "came to me in swift flight" and he explained some of God's prophecy to Daniel. Much later, Gabriel appeared to Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the New Testament in Luke, chapter one, and told her she was going to bear the child who would be "the Son of the Most High." So, I have to conclude that Gabriel is one of high position who receives some of the most important assignments.
Michael, likewise, is high-ranking; he is called "one of the chief of princes" by another angel who appeared to Daniel.
In Daniel, chapter 10, the very angel described in detail by Daniel explains that he was detained twenty-one days by "the prince of the kingdom of Persia" (I assume that "Persia's prince" was one of the fallen angels who do Satan's bidding). It took him that long to reach Daniel, and it was Michael coming to help him that allowed him to complete his mission.
These angels are no wimps! In the Book of Hebrews, chapter 1, it's written, "let all the angels of God worship Him." In the Living Bible, it continues, "God speaks of His angels as messengers swift as the wind and as servants made of flaming fire."
Angels are mentioned many times in the Bible. Usually unseen by human eyes, never to be worshipped or prayed to. In Luke 22 angels helped Jesus by their presence with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane on what we call Good Friday. In Matthew chapter 4, they ministered to Jesus after He was in the desert 40 days, being tempted by Satan.
Angels are God's messengers and guardians of the people He has created. we can thank and praise God for permitting them to minister His grace to us.
One more note: the beings who like to be called spirit guides are not of God. They are deceiving spirits and can only be in league with Satan, the prince of demons. Take warning. God warns of being involved in any type of sorcery or witchcraft and specifically warns agains praying to any one but Himself.
I hope this small journey into the realm of angels has been helpful to you. You may be able to order Billy Graham's book online. A good Bible should have a mini-concordance in the back, where you can look up all the references to angels.
You could even contact me here with questions. I don't know all the answers, but I probably can find them for you if you want help in that area.
I close with the description of Daniel's angel visitor:
from the Living Bible: "I looked up and suddenly there before me stood a person robed in linen garments, with a belt of purest gold around his waist, and glowing, lustrous skin! From his face came blinding flashes like lightning, and his eyes were pools of fire; his arms and feet shone like polished brass, and his voice was like the roaring of a vast multitude of people." If you can, read about the that visit in Daniel, chapter 10, verses 1 to 21. It is absolutely fascinating! You will both pity and envy Daniel as you read about his reaction.
"Praise God from Whom all blessings flow, Praise Him for His excellent goodness!"
