Lester Briggs Died Today

From my 6th floor balcony
5/19/2010 5:47:08 AM    [ Flag as Spam or Inappropriate ]

Rain and cooler temps are on the docket for today, that's OK, I am happy, so what else matters?

When last we met I was describing the horrible condition that had beset my body. Everything came to a head on the Saturday before Super Bowl Sunday.

As difficult as it was, I pulled my fat old body out of bed, and was getting ready to go downstairs to facilitate our regualr Saturday discussion group, when a 'not so funny thing happened on the way to my front door.

I was sitting in my recliner, trying to put my shoes and socks on, and even that was a challenge, I discovered that I could not pull myself up and out of the chair... The first thought I had was...'this is a hell of a fix, Stanley' and my name isn't Stanley. But I do talk to myself.

I decided that before I could move up to a vertical position, I needed to hit bottom, and I did. Well, that was a good thing because I found the quarter that I thought I'd lost the night before. I also had to make a mental note that the carpet needed vacumming.

I braced myself on a nearby chair with one hand, then placed my other hand on the bed...slowly (very slowly) pulling myself to my knees, still pushing with all my strength, I was able to stand up straight.

Once on my feet I was able to slowly move about, dusted myself off (remember, the carpet needs cleaning) and head for the meeting.

I don't remember much about the discussion, or even the topic, I do remember when it was over, I went directly back to my apartment, and called my Dr. They have emergency care at her office, only on weekends, and I was now in emergency mode.

The young woman on the other end of the phone said as long as I got to the office by noon, I could be seen. I immediately called my friend Marge and asked her to drive me to the doc, 'cause I was in no shape to drive anything at all.

Off we went, hoping they would find out what was happening to me.

When we arrived, I sat, but I was really weak, and my body was in such pain, I knew all of my sins from the past had caught up with me...and there were many, sins...

Before long I was in the exam room and a nice young woman walked in, she introduced herself as Dr...., as my regualr Dr. was out of town.

She poked, she prodded, she did the typical thing with her eyes and forehead...you know, when they can't figure something out, they revert to body language.

In this case it was refreshing to hear..."Geez, I have no idea what's going on with you...this is one hell of a mystery."

Blood test, urine samples and a myriad of other pokes and prods hopefully would reveal this demonic mystery that had invaded my body.

The Dr. then said, "Take two of these and if you don't feel better in the morning, call a witch doctor."

She called about two hours later saying that test results showed high levels of creatinine, blood pressure too high, blood sugar levels wacko, and oh yeah, I needed to lose weight.

Little did I know that I was quickly becoming a victim of bad medicine.

Tomorrow, Super Bowl Sunday, not a good day. dlj
