This Week's Head-Shaking Fraud Capers 7/31/2008 12:01:59 PM Here's a small sample of stories I've come across over the past few days.
I've never heard of landfill fraud before, but a waste & recycling company has been charged with evading $15 million in landfill fees by failing to weigh the trucks. I wonder how much of that goes on.
Did you hear about voter fraud in Marion County? Apparently, absentee voters were supposedly given $40 and crack cocaine for their ballots. (This one qualifies for my “new lows in white-collar crime" file.)
A nurse has plead guilty to Medicaid fraud by submitting false claims for payment. Billings apparently exceeded $14 million (she’s either a fast worker, or it took an awfully long time for someone to notice). Anyhow, the lady will be sentenced on October 24 and faces a maximum of ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The company she set up also faces a $500,000 fine. Her company also employed about 350 aides, but even so, $750,000 in fines seems like small change compared to the $14 million dollars she took. So, what's happened to all that money?
And it seems that Microsoft can be victimized too. A Microsoft manager who used to manage domain names has been sentenced to nearly two years in prison for bilking Microsoft out of $1 million in fake registration fees. She also was ordered to pay $923,641 in restitution. Now, this fine seems more appropriate. If you’re going to steal money, shouldn’t you have to give it all back?
