Sands of Time 6/11/2009 3:02:42 PM I believe our days are measured out in “grains of sand” in the proverbial Hour Glass of Time. The sand seems to run down more quickly with each passing year and of course the glass can't be turned over to start again. But given the chance, I really wouldn’t want to begin all over. I’d miss my grown children, grandchildren, quiet times with my husband in our mountain home, and I hate the thought of going through childhood again.
As I near another “milestone” birthday, my thoughts often rewind to think about departed loved ones – particularly my father and both sets of grandparents. They were such a huge part of my life and I could never thank them enough for the love, wisdom and support they provided. I only hope I can do the same for my family; maybe they will think of me fondly when I’m but a memory. It gives the heart comfort to have such warm memories, especially during the tough times.
Recently my cousin presented me with a great gift: a scrap book with copies of the original newspaper columns written by my great grandmother during the 1930’s and 1940’s. I also received notebooks filled with Great Grandma’s stories from her life during the late 1800’s through the mid 1900’s. I knew Great Grandma was a writer, but to have her original handwritten stories and articles in my possession is a blessing and a privilege. It got me to thinking that maybe my stories, books and poems will be read by my grandchildren and great grandchildren yet to be born. And so, in that sense, the Hour Glass can be turned over to allow the sand to fall through once again.
